Cards covet Hellickson, could deal Rasmus

08:14 AM ET 07.14 | The trade deadline talk is starting to pick up for the Tampa Bay Rays. Aside from the B.J. Upton chatter we have been hearing since last season, reports out of St. Louis say the Rays have interest in Cardinals center fielder Colby Rasmus. This is not the first time we have heard of Tampa Bay's rumored admiration for Rasmus and it is easy to see why. ... Even without Upton, Tampa Bay could run out an outfield trio of Matt Joyce, Desmond Jennings, and Brandon Guyer next season. They also have Ben Zobrist who can platoon from either side of the plate. For three years of Rasmus -- assuming he does not sign an extension -- the Cardinals reportedly covet Rays' right-hander Jeremy Hellickson.

I would be shocked if Hellickson goes anywhere.

Looks like we finally agree on something :).

Given what the Cards have available to trade - Hellickson would be a nice addition.Morning to all - will be in meetings most of the day. Have a good one.

Hellickson would be a nice addition. I firmly believe we need something else in the rotation. Are they ready to give the CF job to Jay full time, though?

I doubt it will happen based on this paragraph from the article:

The problem with a Rasmus to the Rays deal is supply and demand. The Cardinals are reportedly seeking starting pitching in return for him. The Rays have the goods to get a deal done; however, they do not have the demand for Rasmus.

I would assume that the Rays would only want Rasmus if they move Upton, but I may be wrong on that.

But the Rays have no use for Rasmus!

"With three years of service time at the end of 2011, Rasmus will be arbitration eligible for the first time. If you believe the Upton comparison holds true, he will be owed somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 million. That is cheap for a talented player; however, the Rays are not shallow in the outfield. Even without Upton, Tampa Bay could run out an outfield trio of Matt Joyce, Desmond Jennings, and Brandon Guyer next season. They also have Ben Zobrist who can platoon from either side of the plate."

The Rays aren't trading Hellickson. Period. He's under control for years. I can see them moving Niemann or Davis, and even Shields if they fall much further back. But not Hell-Boy. I will be surprised if Upton *isn't* traded by the 31st. If Jennings is the real deal, it's time to bring bring him up. That means Upton has to leave to make room in CF.

I don't see the Rays trading Hellickson. He is years away from being arbitration eligible, so he is costing them nothing.

One guy they may be willing to deal is Jeff Neimann. Whenever Matt Moore gets called up, somebody will have to be dealt.
