Pirates may actually be buyers this time

08:12 AM ET 07.15 | And now for something completely different. The Pirates have the opportunity to be buyers approaching the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, one of the many perks of their first-half success. They have a 47-43 record entering a game tonight against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park and are just a game out of first place in the National League Central Division coming out of the All-Star break. Their record, along with a bevy of injuries, has them in position, should they choose, to acquire players rather than give them away. "In theory we would absolutely like to add to this club," general manager Neal Huntington said. "We work every day to try to see if there is the right piece to add to the club."

I'll believe it when I see it.

A couple of the kids that they brought up from Indy to fill in for injured players have done pretty good. If they could trade one of them for a hard hitting first base, right field, or catcher that might not be too bad.

Not to mention all the people about to come off the DL. This team may surprise again in the 2nd half.

I think this is a good thing - the Pirates have a great ballpark and they have good sports fan (look at the Steelers Fans). They just need to put a winning product on the field...

Bill Madlock might be available.
It is nice to see this team playing reasonably well after so long.

This would be great if the Pirates could finish above .500 and contend. Lord know those fans have waited long enough.

Word That...

I don't know that anyone in their Organization knows how to be a Buyer...

When asked for a comment, Pirates GM Neal Huntington responded, "What? You can trade FOR players too?"

What can you buy with pocket lint?

Don't forget about the Penguins. They've been sold out for years.

Will they actually resign any of their current players? Doubt if they recall what a long-term deal for a player is...
