10:06 AM ET 07.15 | According to one anonymous NASCAR driver, most of his fellow competitors aren't gearheads. [Driver X writes:] "Don't get me wrong: We have plenty of drivers who could take apart their own cars, or yours, and put them back together. But we also have an embarrassingly large group of guys who couldn't change their own oil if they had to. They might not even be able to change the air freshener hanging off the rearview mirror. And I'm talking about guys who have won a lot of races."

Nice to see you back, and congrats on the third rugrat. My guess for the 'non' gearheads would be the Busch boys and the like. Remember when guys like Bill Elliot became a champion BECAUSE he could build his own cars? The times have changed.

???Dad taught Kyle and I everything about race cars, how to work on them, how to drive them, how to protect them,??? Busch said. ???Even when we did things wrong racing them, he was there to pinpoint what was wrong.???

Their father and grandfather raced so I would guess that they have a fair amount of mechanical knowledge.

I could take apart my lawnmover and rebuild it before I was 5, OK maybe 7. Helped a childhood friend rebuild a 65 Mustang frame off (that term had not even been coined yet) that took us 18 months.
Nowadays I don't bother changing my oil just because of the mess, why go through that for minimal $ savings at best. We have drive thru oil changes around here, they give us a soda or bottle of water, I can read the paper and let someone else deal with the mess, and this cost me what $12 maybe. Plus every sewer opening around here has "Drains to Ocean" painted on it so idiots do not pour their oil in the sea, anyone that can ignore that does not have; kids, a conscience or a life.

As far as the post goes, does this fact surprise anyone? some of these guys are anything but manly, in fact a few might have pinky fingers that rise when drinking from a cup.

Now gentlemen that is what I call a first post!

I wonder if this driver has been talkin' to the Seattle bird-brain -- "Golden Tatter" ...

Can't be Ryan Newman, he's got an engineering degree.

That reminds me of my first oil change. It went smooth, but I forgot to put oil on the rubber on the filter. My next time, the oil change was a rather goopey affair. Back when I owned my Fiero and my '95 Z28, that I still have I don't even bother. Maybe if I dug a hole in the back yard and drove over it.

Look out Shiprock -- tree huggers will be diggin' in your back yard ...

If they knew how hard the dirt is to dig, almost as hard as the water :)

True, the kids at Jiffy Lube are probably making about 10 bucks an hour.

July 16, 2011  11:20 AM ET

You know there was this girl that really knew how to change my oil. Clean my clock...

July 16, 2011  12:13 PM ET

July 16, 2011  01:45 PM ET
