08:13 AM ET 07.18 | To what extent are the Red Sox prepared to build for the present? You don't go out and obtain Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford to finish second to the Yankees. You get those guys because you've committed to winning it all. And to not finish things off would be foolish. So, as the trade deadline approaches in two weeks, the Red Sox have to identify what they need to accomplish their goal. From this perspective, they should load up the truck of prospects and send them to the Mets for shortstop Jose Reyes. "I know that everyone seems to think the Red Sox are going to bring in Carlos Beltran, or that they need a pitcher, but today proved to me that their biggest need is to get Reyes and solidify that shortstop position," said an American League scout [Saturday].

They should get Reyes and Ubaldo Jiminez. Otherwise, they are a horrible team.

Heath Bell too.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, BidsNew.com

i checked it out ,really attractive thanks anyway

This sport needs a salary cap. This is nonsense.

Intriguing advice from one columnist. There's no indication that the Red Sox are actually targeting Reyes.

July 18, 2011  09:28 AM ET

How good's his defense? When Crawford 'emerges,' the Sox will have enough offense. Shop for a defensive stopper who will come a little cheaper. Get another pitcher.

God forbid a writer have an opinion. Right?

If the Red Sox did absolutely nothing they could win that division.

Reyes would return to about 20 hr's in Boston.

Too fragile.

His long triples he hits in Citifield left handed would be homers in boston...easily

The Mets should do everything they can to hold onto him.

I think they're gonna try to. Unless another team makes an outrageous offer.

I know nothing of the Mets' farm system. Do they have a SS that could fill in pretty effortlessly?

July 18, 2011  09:41 AM ET

I'd bet that Cashman is developing an ulcer because he can't really make a play for Reyes due to his aging legend at SS problem. Or, maybe he's just figuring he won't be there for next season and couldn't care less.
I wonder if Theo thinks the Jose of this year is for real or he thinks 2009-10 is more like what he'd get for his money. If he's really thinking about the guy at all...

I'd say this is more of a Boston writer positing a hypothetical.

I don't know about effortlessly. But Tejada is a SS. He's with the team now. Good D questionable offense.

Do you think Reyes would have another MVP-caliber season if he signs long term with the Mets?

Personally, I think any team would be crazy to give this guy a big deal. He's got a bad history of injuries and is sneaking up on 30.

That said, the Mets will probably give him the contract Pujols was asking for last off-season.

July 18, 2011  09:56 AM ET

MLB needs to be looking out for all teams. The rich all ready have the fan base and the attendance. They need to be willing to sit it out on some of these players so marginal teams like Pittsburg could go after players like Reyes and create more of a buzz so more fans will want to come out and support them also. It's all a win-win for the whole industry.

That would be a good pickup for them. They should target starting pitching too.
