08:16 AM ET 07.19 | Even if acquired at the deadline, Carlos Beltran wouldn't come cheap. There are no shortage of suitors for [Beltran] as the trade deadline approaches. And the New York Mets are demanding top-notch young talent in return for the outfielder because they are willing to cover his remaining salary, according to a major league source. "From what I gather, they are asking a lot for him because they are willing to pick up all of his salary," the source told ESPNNewYork.com. Beltran is in the final season of a seven-year, $119 million contract. He is owed $18.5 million this season and has full no-trade protection. If Beltran is dealt at the July 31 trade deadline, he would still have nearly $6 million remaining on his contract.

They only way the Mets can get prospects is to cover Beltran's salary.

That would be an incentive for the smaller market teams but the larger market ones wouldn't care as 6 million doesn't mean a whole lot to teams like the Red Sox or Yankees. These guys have eaten worse contracts then that.

I'm a Yankee fan, so it pains me to say this, but the Red Sox will be fine - with or without Beltran. Crawford will be back and the rest of the offense it clicking - just ask the O's last night. If anything, the Red Sox could use a pitcher. Either way, they are a playoff team.

I'd love to see the Red Sox release Drew, today and then put Reddick in RF to the deadline and see if he can handle it then look to trade on the 31st.
Reddick is already a huge improvement. You know you suck when you are pinch hit for by Darnell McDonald, as Drew was last night.
