08:08 AM ET 07.19 | Ty Lawson recently posed an interesting thought on his Twitter account. "I wonder if I can file for unemployment." So we asked. Can an NBA or NFL player currently apply for unemployment due to the lockouts in each sport? The short answer is no, not yet anyway. Larry Parker, a spokesman for the N.C. Employment Security Commission, sent the following explanation in an e-mail to the Observer: "The answer right now is no, NBA players would not be eligible for benefits, mainly due to [the] fact the NBA season is not in session. There is a reasonable expectation on the players part that they may play once the season begins." Certainly the league will reinforce that impression Tuesday when all 30 teams release regular-season schedules.

Some people who don't deserve it always looking for a handout while the ones who do deserve it cannot catch a break. I got no sympathy for guys who earn upwards of over 500k to play B-Ball.

Live within your means, get rid of the hanger ons and you'd have no problems until the season resumes.

the NC employment security guy does not know what he is talking about. It all depends on how they are paid. If they are paid 1099, then the answer is no. IF they are paid by W2 and taxes (state, federal, local) are taken out, then the answer is yes.

This guy is a freakin tool10% unemployment in this country and he's joking about 'feeding his family'?PATHETICAnd this is why the owners will eventuslly win.....these players (for the mist part) are stupid kids that don't understand the big picture

exactly.. expecially they keep thinking to themselves and want to go play overseas. Back in the day, the greatones would band together and end the lockout. Jordan knows this and they need to call him up about that. Stupid knuckleheads... Quit talking about going to play overseas and band together and figure out how to end the lockout... Besides the NFL players just did..

Yeah right. I was assuming things, but you cleared it up perfectly. Either way, as I said. If it were me and I were eligible, I'd file.

I would too... and file for SSI (when Im retired)

Doc, its not about them actually doing it......Its about making it public, which even though it may br within your rights, you have to be conscientious of your fans, who this statement can only piss offLok at what latrell said a decade ago, it still is probably wha he is most k own for...and despised for.....even more than choking his coach out

Good post - You're right - It's not so much if they actually are able to file (or do) it's the principle and perception of being a tool.

I stay cool but this is pretty awful.

You guys are right. I guess I've exposed myself for being a tool, which shouldn't be confused with exposing my tool, which I haven't done...YET.

Setting aside the basic moral question of gazillionaires filing for unemployment, the comments from the NC Employment Security spokesman are incorrect. "Reasonable assurance" is not an issue here. It's a labor dispute between an employer and a union. Since there's a lockout, players who are members of a union may be eligible.
