08:07 AM ET 07.20 | Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is doing his part. [Johnson said Tuesday] there is a need for early action to identify financing for a new arena for the Kings and that he is in regular telephone contact with NBA Commissioner David Stern on moves made to date. "There is a sense of urgency," Johnson told reporters at his weekly press briefing. "We know the deadline is coming in March 2012. We don't want to wait until 2012" to make things happen. The Maloof family earlier this year pushed to move the Kings to Anaheim. But under a reprieve from the NBA, Sacramento has until March 1, 2012, to have funding secured. The mayor's arena task force toured the suburbs last week in a bid to gain regional support for a new downtown sports and entertainment facility starting with the 2015 season.

Downtown would be better... better than the present location.

That said... gonna be a tough road for KJ.

QUOTE(#4):

Now if the players union and the NBA have the same intensity and care of getting the CBA deal done then they won't have problem w/ the season getting started. I don't get why they are not meeting more before the season starts.

Maybe KJ should offer to play home games for them for free?

Bet the Kings owners would stick around for that ;-) !

Your city is broke and keeping an NBA team is a top priority for your administration?? Sounds like he used to be CEO at a bank! Ouch

July 20, 2011  12:31 PM ET

sorry kj. maloofs are goofs

July 20, 2011  12:50 PM ET

Sorry KJ. Might have to pull the plug on this one. You are still one of my top guards ever.

Well it should be ONE of his top priorities!

Major league franchises = jobs, tax revanues and publicity (possible tourist dollars); especially for smaller market cities.

Nothing says 'death to a city' like losing a major sports franchise.

Does it really matter? If Sacramento doesn't build a winner, they could build them a Taj Mahal, and the fans still aren't coming. The fans will support a winner regardless of where they play.

actually both places they have wanted to make the arena would be better at Cal Expo where the State Fair is held or at the Train yards....there is nowhere downtown to build an arena

Kings can't leave Sactown! Lakers fans will have to drive all the way to Oakland if this happens.
