Quade blasts Castro, Barney after loss

08:15 AM ET 07.21 | Mike Quade, not far removed from his upbraiding of umpires, on Wednesday turned his ire on could-be franchise players Starlin Castro and Darwin Barney. The Cubs are thinking big with Castro and Barney, projecting that their middle infield is set for years to come. That didn't stop their manager from absolutely blasting them after Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in front of 37,864 fans. Mike Quade waited almost 25 minutes after the game before he walked into the interview room and addressed the media. He had met with select players and lectured them about effort and energy. ... In the 97-degree heat, Michael Martinez popped up toward second base. Castro drifted over, called off Barney and lost it in the sun as the ball dropped to the dirt. "Put the negativity behind us," Quade said. "Play with some freaking intensity."

Player's lose pop ups and fly balls in the sun or lights. It happens, not like effort would cure that.

Definitely agree...losing a ball in the sun or lights happens to all fielders from time to time...no need to take out your frustrations on the players when this happnes.
Morning Mongo.

Morning Barkeep. This is a very frustrating year for the Cubs, they don't even get to look down on the Pirates this year.

Sounds like what used to happen at the Metrodome to a lot of players.

Two days ago Todd Helton lost a throw from 3rd base in the twilight sun. It led to a big inning and a loss. Afterwards, Jim Tracy didn't throw Helton under the bus. What does Quade think he's accomplishing. Does he really think he gets players to "forget the negativity" by yelling at them? What a fool.

Love the catchy title, "Quade blasts Castro and Barney"
I can't help but picture Arnold Schwartzenegger as Quade from Total Recall blowing away Fidel Castro and Barney the dinosaur.

Logtime Cubs fan. Not bringing in Ryno (strike 1), Getting swept by the Dodgers in the playoffs and having my friends in Los Angeles sweeping my leg with a broom (strike 2), the complacency this team shows especially not winning for over a century... (strike 3). Go Pirates. I've thrown in the towel.

If you play in Tampa, you're playing in an open air spring training facility. The Trop isn't in Tampa.

Quade was a mistake. He may have done well with a team of kids, but he doesn't what it takes to manage that disfunctional mess. Maybe no one does. Ryno probably wakes up every morning thanking God he didn't get hat job.

Castro was an all-star, right? No one liked him when he ran Cuba anyway. As for Barney, believe he is a better bowler, but he never could beat 'Twinkle-toes' Flintstone...

I think they were trying to hide the Trop from public view. That's why they put it where they did
