Bell now on Blue Jays' wish list

08:11 AM ET 07.21 | There is the old saw about never having enough pitching, an adage to which Toronto may subscribe this trade deadline season. Teams in need of bullpen help are contacting the Blue Jays about their wide array of setup types. Turns out the Jays are looking for relievers, too. The Jays have inquired about the Padres' available bullpen parts, including closer Heath Bell, according to major league sources. What are the Jays thinking? It's possible they want to acquire a reliever to spin him to another club. Then again, the Jays rank next to last in save percentage in the American League. They might want a genuine closer for next season. Bell is a potential free agent, but the Jays would stand a better chance of signing him if they acquired him now and began the recruiting process while he was part of their club.

Just because you get the guy in a trade doesn't mean he wouldn't go to the highest bidder when he's a free agent.

I think he would be on most peeps radar regardless - the guy has the tools and the talent, and he ain't getting anywhere in a hurry laboring in SD.

The Blue Jays are 11 games out. Any move like this one is only to package him and move him for more " future stars ".....
They just need to keep convincing their fans they are " building for the future " while charging the ticket prices of today. It will work as long as long as nobody realizes that future will never happen.

Toronto has always been a bit dysfunctional in terms of their vision for the team. Never allowing themselves to truly suck and rebuild, but almost never contending for long. It is a tough division and a tough job for them to compete. but they need a better strategy than hiring just enough to almost compete.

They have a payroll of around $62 million. Only six teams have a lower one. I really do not think they have any intention of investing in and keeping their best players.

They just got out from under some bad contracts. they have an ongoing dysfunction. It appears like they are pairing payroll, but then they go and make some big signings...they have not had a cohesive plan in some time.

If Toronto is interested does this mean the top tier teams are not so interested anymore?

This would be a classic AA move. He doesn't want Bell, he wants his draft picks.

He will trade some prospects that he doesn't like, then let him walk as a free agent. Then when he is a free agent, the Jays will get two first round supplement draft picks, where AA can draft someone who he likes as a player.

Not sure I agree with the sentiment here. The direction that Alex Anthopoulos has taken is securing top level talent (albeit minor leaguers) through the draft and trades. I think that they will be active this off season in free agency so that they can take a run for the playoffs. They keep saying that they will have the budget to spent $100 million

They have the richest owners in baseball, and they said they will give the Jays GM a blank cheque when ever he asks for it. Which probably wont be until after next season.

But the Jays are in a rebuild, and don't really need to spend right now on high priced free agents. However, the Jays paid the most (by far) to sign all their draft picks last year, and are doing it again this season. They have spent more money than any other team under AA on prospects in Latin America. While they also have expanded their scouting system by ten fold, and now have one of, if not the biggest scouting departments in baseball.

In Toronto I'm hearing that the Jays want him as part of a potential three-way deal.

Apparently it could be the Jays getting Bell, and sending him to the Cards for Rasmus.
