Busch hype misleading fans?

10:19 AM ET 07.23 | It's quite obvious that Kyle Busch has immense ability on the track. But to compare this relative newcomer's record to those of such NASCAR legends as Richard Petty and David Pearson -- as some in the media are doing -- is absurd. Busch recently achieved the 100-victory plateau, an accomplishment that was widely ballyhooed. A total of 22 of these triumphs have come in events at NASCAR's top level. He has scored 49 wins in the Nationwide Series and 29 on the pickup truck circuit, both lower-tier tours. So it's ludicrous to elevate Busch to the level of Petty and Pearson, as a few are attempting to do. Petty lists 200 victories at NASCAR's highest level, Pearson 105.

Do we discount the 49 wins in Nationwide by Mark Martin? Harvick has 63 wins and only 17 are in Cup.

DAH!! Exactly -- there is no way in hell candy boy can be compared to legends of years ago ... wait about 5-10 years and see how far this "boy" goes. I for one think many of his fellow drivers have about had it with his "move over -- here comes the star" attitude. Almost eight of his wins have been in the "minor leagues" and not with the big dogs. A comparison would be if candy boy went to a day care center to take all comers in a cage match ...

With that being said -- Gibbs (along with toy-yo-das $$ backing) are working their rising sun butts off trying to get another driver with more popularity ... enter Edwards. I hope Roush and Ford match these TURD $$ to keep Edward where he is. toy-yo-da has deep pockets and wants to win at all cost -- NASCAR better keep an eye on this or their racing will wind up being a toy-yo-da IROC look alike series.

Same old, same old. You need a new speech writer. LOL

Nationwide might be on his side, but Petty and Co. never had the luxury of beating ARCA quality drivers to ramp up the wins.

Check how many races Petty ran some years.

Some very small tracks to be sure, many only half-mile, but the competition was still the same. I used to have to search the paper for some small news buried on the last pages.

July 23, 2011  12:01 PM ET

There used to be two or three races a week on small (sometimes dirt) tracks. In other words, cheap, easy wins. Guys didn't race in all of them so the competition was diluted. I hate to sound like I'm supporting Busch, he can be so annoying, but his achievement is remarkable. I'm willing to bet he'll break the 200 win record. That may not make him a 'legendary' racer like Petty, but it makes him worthy of a hell of a lot of respect. Put aside his obnoxious persona and I think most of us will realize that.

i always wonder if it were back in the day and not as much media coverage would he be the next great thing. I guess maybe the legions might have been a bit pricky also we just never got the coverage.

Or Earnhardt Jrs 41 wins (18 cup-23 NW) and 2 Nationwide championships.

This is weak........... even by your standards.

Like him or not KB is one of the best drivers on the circuit right now. I seriously doubt he gives a rats ass what the Earnhardt family fans think about him and I also doubt the rest of the drivers like him any less than disingenuous **** like Carl Edwards or (never) Happy Harvick.

With prize money that sometimes barely hit 4 figures for the winner they didn't have much choice if they wanted to make a decent living.

Which is pretty much what I said in my reply to you last week when you asked me.

I don't think the media hype is misleading anyone......cannot put all the comparative data in one media discussion or editorial.....and since it is available for anyone to look up, no problem.

This media hype about a winning driver is good for Nascar period......like Kyle or not, that boy can drive and he can drive in incomplete~damaged cars, like no one else can today. I would bet good money, that if Kyle was driving "back in the day", his driving skills would still be noteworthy.

Wins give you bragging rights no matter what series you get them in........the media just needs to be more careful with the words "Great" and "legend"......Kyle has many more years to drive before those words apply to him.
