Arena interested in Scotland job

Bruce Arena, the former U.S. national team and Red Bulls coach has expressed his interest in the vacant Scotland job. It is a pretty smart move by Arena because coaching a UK national team is one way to score a club manager job in England, which I believe is Arena's ultimate goal.

Allow me to speak for the Scottish around the world:

AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!
AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!
AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!

*cough* *ahem*

AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!

Okay.

Of course he is. Another sign of his arrogance. He's probably wondering why the English FA hasn't called him yet.

If he did ever land this job, I'd love reading the British media reaction.

December 10, 2007  10:54 AM ET

He seems disconnected from reality.

Yeah, good luck with that pipe dream Arena. They must be banging down your door after your impressive performance in WC 06. Here's a thought, Northern Ireland need a coach, and so do the Faroe Islands, Andorra, Luxembourg, Malta, and Slovenia. Try there first.

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see,
Yer like again,
That fought and died for,
Yer wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Arena's Agents,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Arena would finally be exposed as the mediorce coach he actually is. Poor Ireland though, they'll have to go through years of defensive, uninspired football and loads of underachievement. Arean did loads for the US, but when it comes down to it he's a bit too arrogant and stuck in his ways. Good luck Arena, I hope you do well. But I fear the UK press is going to rip you a new one.

Brits think far too little of the US as a footballing culture to even consider this, I could see Ireland or Northern Ireland (which seems perfect), but no way Scots would go for a Yank coaching their NT.

Though he did bungle the '06 WC, Arena did a much to advance US soccer, I think he gets unfairly slated, however, I guess that has to do with his personality, I hope he gets a chance somewhere.

December 10, 2007  01:00 PM ET

KopHawk, I agree. Arena basically built the current US program from scratch and he doesn't get enough credit for that. What kills him is his arrogance and demeanor, something of which he'll always be remembered for.

But after building from scratch, Arena just wasn't able to take the next step. Many argue he isn't capable of taking the next step.

December 10, 2007  01:17 PM ET

The Scots like their team to win, so Arena won't get the job.

December 10, 2007  01:25 PM ET

Arena gets slammed because he's been given loads of credit, which he deserves; be he won't accept any of the criticism that comes with such a role. Thus his leadership ultimately fails.

December 10, 2007  01:27 PM ET

The Scots are getting too good and have built to much from the ground up to derail it all by hiring a clown like Arena. He needs to set his sights lower...Jamaican bobsled team perhaps?

December 10, 2007  01:55 PM ET

Whomever is laughing and thinking he is a joke is WAY OFF. He brought the US out of obscurity, is an excellent manager of what talent he has available to him, and CAN coach abroad.

He is the entire reason the US is now finally getting respect in the footballing world. Europeans need to wake up, because in ten years, the US will be in the top ten and legitimately so.

December 10, 2007  02:20 PM ET

The Scots aren't going to hire Bruce. It's one thing to aim high, and another thing to be delusional.

Bruce is being delusional.

funny... coulda sworn this article was about Scotland...

December 10, 2007  03:04 PM ET

Dream on arena. never gonna happen. colorado rapids is more like it. your career was over once you signed with the red bulls

December 10, 2007  03:25 PM ET

His career was over as soon as he stayed on after the 02WC. He should have taken that great showing and parlayed it into a good Euro job.

December 10, 2007  03:58 PM ET

He could probably only coach in League 1 in England. Nottingham Forest or someone near the bottom of that league's table.

December 10, 2007  04:59 PM ET

Sorry, this made me laugh the moment I read it

I'm sorry, some of you guys/gals give Arena FAR too much credit. He didn't pull jack **** out of obscurity. Last I recalled he wasn't the coach in 1989 when the program turned around and qualified for Italia '90, or when we advanced to the knockout round in '94.
Sure, I'll give him credit for doing what needed to be done to improve on '98, however, the talent he was working with was already developed and ready to go by the time he guided us in '02.
There are SOOO many other people responsible for making the USMNT credible.
He's not a horrible coach, but he's a one note wonder: 2 d-mids, 1 CM, bunker down, counter counter counter. That's the kind of thing Guatemala does not a team that is trying to be an elite level squad. Thankfully Bradley is moving away from that and the development of Michael Bradley is looking like it'll give us a d-mid/center mid (depending on where he's being played that day) who actually has the ability to score.
Arena is a decent coach, but he needs to look to a MUCH smaller nation if he wants to crack Europe. Slovenia and Luxembourg could be interested. They have some talent and could use his overly defensive style to their advantage.
