Irsay: Manning contract could hurt Colts

08:05 AM ET 07.26 | Yes, says Jim Irsay, Peyton Manning will be the league's highest-paid player -- and, yes, there's a "but." [Irsay] believes a salary cap of roughly $120 million in the first year of the new labor accord, smaller than the last cap in 2009, will complicate things. ... "Whatever the [annual] number [of the contract] is, $20 million, you're topping off there where it becomes very, very difficult to be competitive and to field a team," Irsay said. ... "It's something I hope gets done very quickly and quite frankly it should get done very quickly because he is going to be the highest-paid player, he is going to make more than Brady. But under this system you cannot pay a player $25 million. It's just not going to work, you're not going to be able to compete."

Well Jim... if it's that bad of an inconvenience you should just cut the dude then.

Guess that whole "franchise" tag wasn't such a great idea then Jim seeing as how you have to give him $23M if he signs his tender. Not to mention the fact that if the Colts signature player leaves town because of money the villagers will be on their way to your castle which torches and pitchforks. Smart guy would have made a deal last year

Great minds think alike, my friend...

The NFL just opened for business and already they're negotiating in the media. Yeah, that always ends well.

July 26, 2011  08:18 AM ET

Well, I GUESS alienating your star ticket-seller (and your best chance to win it all) is a strategy. Not a very good one, but it's a strategy.

July 26, 2011  08:19 AM ET

And he may not play, due to that neck...

AMEN!

He'll sign a contract with out-year guarantees that don't affect this year's cap so much. C'mon, they all do this. The rules about what goes under the cap and what doesn't are as arcane as Talmudic scholarship.

You can't have the best qb in the NFL and cry about it Colts!!

Apparently that just isn't the case.

Always a first.

I'm sure another team will gladly make him the highest paid player. Pay him while you can Colts.

"Manning Contract Could Hurt Colts"

I bet no Manning contract would hurt them even more

Why the heck give him all that money, if he might not be able to play.

Is it even a problem? That division sucks, and will continue to suck unless the Texans can get some secondary help. Winning this division is a no brainer.

Nobody in Indy is going to be happy with just winning the division. That said, it may be the most they can hope for. This is a team that's all growing old together, and the AARP cards are starting to show up in their mailboxes.

You got it right. Think about it! Jerry Jones and Mara were on that owners team during all fo this, the Giants are around 11 million over that cap today and the cowboys 18 million over it. They did not sign on to a deal that hurts their own team.
This will be a SOFT cap when it comes to resigning your own vets.
AND, no way did the players sign on to an agreement that hurts their vets because they will be more likely to be cap casualties.
Shades of the DeBartolo contract playbook are being reopened.

Vick will get that tag money. Around 23 million. Ya gotta believe Peyton is worth that much then.
