Bad players make O'Neill want to puke

07:57 AM ET 07.29 | Kevin O'Neill doesn't want to hear about how good your son is. Along with identifying players he wants in his program, [O'Neill] has spent the July recruiting period singling out the ones he doesn't. "I'm so sick of hearing bad players tell me they're NBA prospects," O'Neill said. "Their parents tell me the same thing, too. I could puke. They think they're one-and-done guys and they're not even going to be four-and-done. I don't recruit those kinds of kids." O'Neill's insistence on signing tough-minded, blue-collar players has certainly paid off at USC, where he led last year's Trojans to the NCAA tournament just two years after the program had been decimated by NCAA violations that occurred under O'Neill's predecessor, Tim Floyd.

Sounds like Gary Williams West

I'd like it...if I were a USC fan.

This statement cracked me up "They think they're one-and-done guys and they're not even going to be four-and-done. "

That was pretty good.

If only the rest of the coaches had the spine to stand up and say te same thing about the entitled, warped sense of worth that today's traveling teams and elite camp routines have instilled in players and parents. The coaches at these levels will tell any parent that their kid is the next (fill in the blank) just to make sure the check gets cut and they get paid. In order not to p*** off the coach who actually ahs a good prospect, the college guys allow the fantasy to continue.

It's not THAT hard to rebuild a basketball team. 1-2 years of 2 or 3 good guys and you're back.

And really is what recruits are saying any different than many of the lies that are told to them?

What I don't get with the travel level guys is their expectations. If you are not completely dominating on that level then you probably will not be a one and done.

College ball in general makes me want to puke. It's advanced high school ball now that one-and-done players and street agents have taken over.

I agree... You only need 1 special kid to make a difference.. And if you get a really good coach who can recruit... You will be back in no time..Get a few JUCOs and mix with the young guys can lead to success...btw, I hate Grant.. hahaha

Granted, LUS - part of the problem is exactly what you point out - one or two special players can take a program to the top, so the emphasis is on finding those exceptions to the rule. The street agents and traveling team vultures whisper to any and all with reasonable skills that they could be the exception, then present a vision of outlandish success to the families, open their wallets and emptying bank accounts in pursuit of a pipe dream. All this ends up getting plopped in the laps of the first reality check - the college coach who is looking at a kid as a nice 6th or 7th man in their rotation in a couple of years and has the kid asking about how much a lottery pick can expect after one year.
