07:51 AM ET 07.29 | Speculation that Heath Bell may simply sign next season in San Diego if he's traded hasn't kept interest in him down. The Rangers are pushing hard for [Bell] as Sunday's Trade Deadline approaches. Club officials have stressed that the Rangers are looking for bullpen help on multiple fronts and talking to several clubs. Florida closer Leo Nunez has also been a reliever of interest to the Rangers. But Bell appears to be the Rangers' No. 1 target and they have had multiple conversations with the Padres. A deal is not imminent and the Padres have a high asking price. Bell can be a Type A free agent after the season and the Padres could get two draft picks as compensation if he signs with another team.

Amen to that...

I doubt the Pads will trade Bell, they'd be horrible without him and ticket sales would plummet. The two draft picks loom large when compared to a few marginal prospects.
Ludwick is a different story, Petco doesn't suit him well - c-ya!

Manager Ron Washington is having problems with Neftali Feliz and him blowing too many saves for the Rangers and not taking it too seriously. Feliz had a stellar year last year but this year he has not been the same and it is noticeable. So, the Rangers need a new closer. I don't think Leo Nunez would be great since he doesn't pitch too much but maybe taking a guy like Heath Bell who closes a lot of games and shuts teams down along with fellow reliever Mike Adams and Kyle Gregorson. The Rangers want to win this year and they need a bullpen that can dominate. Their bullpen last year wasn't great but this year they have Darren Oliver pitching more and Neftali Feliz could be a great set-up man but they need that closer to be guaranteed a victory heading into the ninth with a lead.

Rangers need a setup man to get to Neftali, yes he has struggled at times this year but after every questionable outing he comes out gunning for the next one. Wash has faith in Feliz and he will remain the closer even if the Heath Bell trade happens. Bell will be a great set up man for Nefti and give him even more confidence to go out there and do what he does best. This band aid aproach to the 7th and 8th has kept Wash on the edge all year and with the Bell addition the Rangers make a huge upgrade in the BP and will play deep in to October.

If the Padres can get a catching prospect, a starting pitching prospect or a shortstop off the Rangers I think moving Bell makes sense. They have Adams ready to go with Gregerson setting up.

Why do they want Buddy back when they have Beltre at 3rd?!?!?

July 29, 2011  12:31 PM ET

The Rangers don't need Bell ... they need a good starter. The Rangers need to let Neftali throw the fast ball and change up ... let him blow the fast ball past them like he did last year. It's what he does and only needs to do so for 3 hitters. Everybody is messing with his head by telling him he needs to develope more pitches. If he becomes a starter, yes, he'll need more, but as a closer ... no. Lewis, Harrison and Holland have done well, but they aren't Cliff Lee. And I will remind everyone ... Lee didn't really provide the Rangers with that many wins last year. And all the Rangers need is to trade away prospects again this year for a half year rental ... and no, I didn't like the Lee trade last year.

Thank you, I was going to say the same thing. Their #1 priority is to land Ubaldo Jimenez. Not a big Jon Daniels fan, I think he makes too many errors. Rangers close is fine, he can get the job done but the Rangers don't really have an ace pitcher. I like CJ but I don't see him as a #1. The downfall of the Rangers this season, if they don't get a guy like Jimenez is going to be starting pitching.

the nationals should trade for BJ upton and handle him the CF, after all this national team should get ready and be strong for the 2012 season!!

July 29, 2011  04:05 PM ET

either the rangers or the red sox should trade for this elite pitcher, but then again you just can't get everything that you wish to have, at the end you either trade for one or nothing at all!!

July 29, 2011  04:07 PM ET

the reds throw the towel this past weekend, they are following the rays steps!!

July 29, 2011  04:08 PM ET

the pirates couldn't overcome the umps mistakes and they were able to win one game against the lucky braves!!

July 29, 2011  04:10 PM ET

could the pirates win one game out of three against the phillies? it would be hard to achieve this goal!!

Exactly, as a closer you really only need one pitch to succeed, there is definately precedent. a certain Yankees closer has fashioned a HOF career with one pitch..

Ubaldo wouldn't be of any help this year ... he's ice cold, but he would be a nice add for the future. CJ has done fine, but I agree, he's not a number one. I'm not really a fan of their current stating staff or their middle relief, although Lowe is turning out decent. Hunter has been up and down just like Holland and Harrison. Ogando has been a surprise, but still he isn't a number one either. I've heard all about the farm system and the pitching that's supposed to be maturing, but I've heard it for years and years and haven't seen it come through ... so that's been my major disappointment ...
