10:26 AM ET 07.30 | Rory McIlroy firmly believes he could not have a better caddie than JP Fitzgerald, no matter what anybody else thinks. The 22-year-old US Open champion drew criticism for using Twitter yesterday to respond angrily to comments about his course management from former European Tour player Jay Townsend. But, after a second-round 68 at the Irish Open in Killarney, McIlroy stated: "I don't really have any respect for the man. Because of how long it has been going on (he claims nearly three years), that's why I said something. "I have to stand up for JP because he's the best man that I think I can have on my bag. He's taken me from 200th in the world to major champion and now fourth in the world."

Wow, The anti Tiger. Standing up for his caddy and showing loyalty. I have liked this guy for a while and this is just another reason why

Yeah he's a good kid and its nice to see a tour play stand up for his caddie, unlike TIGERLILLY.

McIlroy seems like a pretty solid guy. Hope it stays that way. Continued success, Rory.

So he got enough money to somewhat fix his hair. He still looks like raggady anne if you know who that is; Mccelroy is a childish girly man the commentator i am sure knows there are better caddies out there mccelroy is just taking up for his doll baby.

grow up Rory there is nothing wrong with constructive criticism no one respects anyone that can give it but not take it; oh yeah you are not Michael Jordan that is why he did not have to put up with criticism because he was the perfect athlete unlike you Rory the spoiled girly man

A professional golfer and his caddie have a very special relationship. Loyalty plays a huge part in their being able to trust each other and to act as a team. I've heard and read several articles stating that Rory is indeed a welcome addition to golf's super stars. He's is fun, honest, young, and speaks his mind. Remember all pundits sometimes speak off the cuff and put their foot in their mouth by saying silly things. This is an instance of that. Rory is a good golfer and is in on the road to becoming great. Sit back and watch JP & Rory instead of being such sour & sexual name-calling spectators.

Magnificent.

You've achieved every stereotype of the dim southern hayseed.

I say that results speak louder than any commentator out there

July 31, 2011  09:51 AM ET

I like what I see and what I hear so far rom young McIlroy. Everybody has an opinion and mine is that if you knock him for defending his caddy then you just don't like the kid. And for that I stereotype you as a moron.

Most commentators are hacks.....

July 31, 2011  10:23 AM ET

Good job Rory, sticking up for your caddy is excellent. People will remember you for decades after your commentator critic is gone. And sticking up for your guy will be one of many good reasons they do.

I enjoy the fact that most of the "puny" negative comments come from hacks who couldn't carry the kids bag.

Exactly. How many tournaments did that "expert" commentator win? Oh yeah...

Well said. Rory is a breath of fresh air, extremely talented, down to earth, likeable, the kind of kid every parent wants to have. I like him and I think most folks do!

Come now Helen - there are plenty of those stereotypes left untouched in that one ;-)

The only one to judge the value of the caddy input is Rory. How does the TV guy know what the caddy says to Rory and what Rory decides to do on his own?
