D.C. United to trade Gomez?

While negotiations have not gone well between Christian Gomez and D.C. United, I hear that at least one MLS club has expressed interest in trading for Gomez's rights. Gomez's contract expires at the end of the month, but under league guidelines, United would retain his MLS rights -- and have to be compensated (allocation money, draft picks?) by the other club. In this case, the trade would be contingent on Gomez signing a contract with his new team. Gomez's issue with United has been guaranteed years in a new contract. United has apparently offered one; Gomez wants at least two.

Do I hear the Red Bulls on line one?

What about the Earthquakes? Don't they still need players?

J. Hova: I have no doubt RBNY would love to have Gomez, but they have $800,000 tied up with two players (Angel and Captain America). That's 1/3rd of the salary cap.

They're going to give Altidore more money to keep him happy.

They DESPERATELY need to re-work their defense and goalkeeping situation (meaning some high salary guys will have to be cut... but their salary will still count against the cap).

They'll have no money whatsoever to nab Gomez with.

I'm almost certain Gomez is going to Kansas City or San Jose. Heck, maybe even New England. But the two teams who need him the most, LA and NY... they just don't have the cap space to pull it off.

And yes, I have backed off of my "Gomez won't be signed by any MLS team other than DCU."

I always thought the owner-operators of MLS teams were going to use the DP tag with some sanity.

It seems Kansas City and San Jose are perfectly willing to use a $500,000/yr player for the DP.

I keep forgetting about Claudio Reyna. Damn, all that man is doing is stealing paychecks.

i still think that if NE got gomez they could be back to the championship and would have a chance to win it this time

Agreed. With Shalrie Joseph serving em up to Twellman and Gomez, it could be dangerous.

gomez belongs in DC

DC UNITED!!!!!

Yep, reyna has to go. i say cut him, get gomez and a DP, an you'll be good

December 11, 2007  06:07 PM ET

Yeah, NY has to buy out Reyna's contract if they want to be successful. Osorio is going to help bring in some south american talent, and I am sure he would love to have Gomez there.

I agree with you one million percent crosscountrycpjon. I am no fan of Reyna so the sooner the Red Bulls can get rid of him, the better.

if NE scored Gomez, they would be scary. It's the exact kind of DP signing the cheapskate Kraft would go for.
