Thome may be a fit in Philly

08:11 AM ET 08.02 | Waiver trade moves can't be expected to work out as well as Cody Ross in 2010, but that won't stop teams from hoping. [Twins GM] Bill Smith and the front office have enough respect for [Jim Thome] that it's likely they would run some scenarios past him to give him a final fling at a championship ring. The big question: Would the Twins prefer to hang onto Thome until he hits career home run No. 600? ... Thome's name has been making the rounds as a possible late-season pickup in Philadelphia, where he has a friend in Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. Last year GM Ruben Amaro Jr. picked up Mike Sweeney in August. He could buy himself some residual post-Hunter Pence love by bringing back the immensely popular Thome for a swan song in Philly.

Where are they going to play him? His stint with the Dodger's last year was not a success.

Yeah, the Sox shipped him to LA a couple years ago since the Dodgers were going to the playoffs. Nothing really happened on Thome's end.

Some guys really take to that 1st off the bench pinch hitter, Thome didn't with the Dodger's, can't see how it will be any different here.

Unless they plan on benching Howard for Thome there is no place for him to play with the Phillies.

He will be used as a bat off the bench and could spell Howard from time to time. The attractive part for Thome is that he would potentially get a last shot at a ring.

The Hard part is getting him through waivers.

Agreed. He won't/can't play the field anymore because of his foot.. so what would he be in the NL other than a pinch hitter?

If you???re the Phillies, do you really want to waste a roster spot on a one dimensional player who will give you just 1 at bat a game? Now if they got to the World Series he would make a great DH in the AL park.

His name is Ross Gload.

This would be a fantastic move, but in order for the Phillies to get him, literally every team in the league would have to pass over him. That won't happen, especially if it's before he hits number 600.

Come to Cleveland, bro.

August 2, 2011  12:23 PM ET

I'm sure another team will claim him before the Phillies can....they'll end up getting that roider Giambi

One of true great guys in the game. Tiger Tribe games in 90's were a treat. Would love to see Jimmy get a ring !

Don't do it Jimmy, finish your career with a little dignity. Don't throw it all away now.

August 2, 2011  09:49 PM ET

the hard part its, that thome wouldn't have a spot on the team unless phillies firstbaseman injury himself, then maybe just maybe thome could be playing every day!!

August 2, 2011  09:54 PM ET

i think two years ago the white sox trade thome to the dodgers, thome was unable to do much in the national league it seems that he only can play good in the american league, plain and simple!!!
