Red Bulls closing in on coach

New York is wrapping up its coaching search and, from what I'm told, is preparing to announce its choice this week. The assumption here -- and with everyone I've spoken to in MLS circles -- is that Juan Carlos Osorio is moving to the Meadowlands from Chicago. In which case, the Red Bulls would have to compensate the Fire.

This makes me mad. I would have hoped that Osorio had stayed and built a truly competitive team. MLS wants NY to have success so bad that they allow this s*** to happen.

Little Evil: It's not an MLS thing. It's a sports thing.

Look at the NBA and the tirade that was Larry Brown. He did the exact same thing.

Look overseas at the EPL and Primera League, where it happens ALL THE TIME.

It was a matter of time before it happened in the MLS.

ESPN says it's Osorio, but then again they are not the most credible.

The Red Bulls had an opportunity to make a huge splash and they blew it. Then again they keep blowing opportunities.

J. Hova, I agree with you. But something keeps rattling in my brain. Who would have been a big splash--realistically? Some of the names people have been throwing out there just weren't going to take a job like this (until maybe at the tail end of their careers), as much as we'd love to see it happen.

This is definitely typical in today's sports, but it was a lame move by JCO and the Red Bulls. The Fire denied the Red Bulls request to speak with him and now they've hired him. It's BS. Guppy gave JCO the chance to make a name for himself in the MLS and he repays him by bolting for more money. While I get it happens all the time, it doesn't mean I have to like it or respect those who do it. Good riddance JCO you punk!!! Hopefully NY will be horrible this year.

December 11, 2007  01:13 PM ET

Totally agree Screwball.

December 11, 2007  01:15 PM ET

Screwball - If you worked for say RC Cola and you brought them better recognition and then after a year Coca-Cola offers you more money and perks to take over the same job for them, you'd turn them down??

Didn't think so....

December 11, 2007  01:18 PM ET

Why are we hold coaches to a higher "loyalty standard" than the rest of us?? It's just a job. We ALL want more money, and for all we know maybe he and his family weren't happy in Chicago.

December 11, 2007  01:22 PM ET

MadridistAmericano: read the story completely. Guppy offered him a higher contract FROM THE ONE THAT HE HAD ALREADY SIGNED! If you sign a contract it's because you thought it was fair in the first place and you should honor it. But that's besides the point. I get your point, but Guppy also offered to give JCO a raise to keep him with the Fire and he turned it down. A side note to this is NYC is WAY more expensive than Chitown. JCO has shown little loyalty in his career so expect him to move on soon if he has any success in NY.

Anyhow, at least we can agree that Real Madrid is the friggin bomb.

Yeah big deal... let Osorio go and quit whining about it. It's the that the U.S. soccer fans begin to realize that this happens all the time, and will undoubtedly happen more in the future! So enough with the whining and moaning (Screwball).

Look at Juande Ramos and how he bolted Sevilla for Tottenham. Look at Mourinho and him dumping Porto for Chelsea. Heck lol, just look at American Football and Saban dumping the Dolphins for Alabama.

December 11, 2007  01:50 PM ET

It becomes less about the game and more about the money. If we don't start holding these people to higher standards then why bother watching any team sport. I think it's rotten what Juande Ramos did. I have no problem with coaches leaving at the end of their contract or the owners deciding to fire them. But it puts a black eye on your resume' when you pull this kind of crap, and in turn takes a little more soul out of the game.

&%#$@: lame, imao, lol. you're a tool. whether that's a 90's word or not, it's true.

JSBach...I stated that I understand that it's the reality of today's sports landscape. And, imao (lol...so lame) it's not complaining, it's having an opinion about something that I don't like. And just because other foolios choose to do the same thing doesn't make it right either. Just ask Bonds. Furthermore, Saban has lost a lot of respect around football and fans and has become the butt of many jokes.

December 11, 2007  03:44 PM ET

Screwball - Don't let him bait you. As a fellow Madridista just please let him pop off because he's retarded and won't go away.

OK, now with all things being equal would you rather coach in Chicago or NY? NY is the bigger market and they have the full backing of RED BULL. Their new stadium is going to be ridiculously sweet once they get it built. I don't see how you can blame the guy. I wouldn't suggest that he leave RBNY anytime soon, but career-wise it was no-brainer. He might not have been given this chance to coach in the media capital of world again.

December 11, 2007  04:16 PM ET

Kopper: You got a point there. It would have been great if they could have pulled in a Capello or a Lippi or even Klinsmann, but I cannot understand how this team in the biggest market in the U.S. (that might be a homer statement) can't land a big name coach or a big name player. The DP slot is being used on Claudio Reyna who is a shadow of his former self, and quite honestly his former self wasn't that great.

MardidistAmericano I could not agree with you more on that statement. Now on this &%#$@ guy he is just too funny to take seriously. I just laugh everytime I see the same old comments. Football is life around the world and no one can take that away from us and it is only gaining strengh in America and will continue to do so! Long Live the Beautiful game!
