Did Molina spit on home plate ump?

08:15 AM ET 08.03 | The fact the Miller Park roof opened and closed three times wasn't the only extraordinary line in Tuesday's game story. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was ejected in the 10th inning after being called out on strikes by home plate umpire Rob Drake. Molina erupted after Drake punched him out -- so much so that he not only bumped Drake but also spit in his face while arguing. Molina likely will find himself suspended for multiple games after his outburst, leaving St. Louis without one of its best players at an important point in the season.

He DID NOT spit in his face intentionally - sometimes spittle flies when you're angry! If the ump had made the right call to start with, it would have never happened!

Hopefully this doesn't tarnish his reputation as it did Roberto Alomar.

I don't think so. Alomar's clearly had intent, while Yadi's was collateral damage.

Drake was absolutely horrible last night, btw........on both sides.

yes he was...saw the game on MLB network. an entertaining game though, more so than watching the Braves get their arses handed to them by the Nats.

He should be thrown out of the league.

DEATH PENALTY!

Yadi did nothing wrong. He was just irate at a non-qualified umpire. He was up close and yelling at him and may have sprayed him. It was nothing at all like Alomar. If he sprayed him it was purely accidental. Drake made it look dramatic by lunging back and wiping his face, obviously wanting to get the "OH MY" comments from the crowd and the attention from the announcers. Plus, we have no idea how much chirping was going on between those two all night, since Yadi is the catcher. It was nothing at all, trust me. Just a competitor fed up with bad calls all night.

first off it was the right call...secondly once is an accident, twice is not...and even if you think the call was wrong? #1 it wasn't the worst call ever and #2 so this gives every batter the right to "spittle"....I'm tired of head coaches and players act like a 2 year old that had it's toy taken away...give him 6 games and get the jerk out of there...let him go drinking with drunk Uncle Tony

To me, it didn't looked like he intentionally spit at the umpire but he clearly bumped him. So I would think that Molina is going to ride the pine for a few days at least. I would also think that today's game is going to be tense on both sides of the field - no team likes their stars getting hit.

August 3, 2011  12:32 PM ET

ESPN showed Drunk Tony in the LR answering questions..every time he opens his mouth his jerk rating explodes...what an idiot....and Molina says he didn't spit on the ump (let alone more than once)..he said it was his sweat....right

August 3, 2011  12:40 PM ET

Saw the replay... you can see the umpire recoil. twice.... really gross.. And the call was pretty fair in my estimation... way to close to take with two strikes.. Molina got fooled on the pitch and took it out on the umpire.. suspension should be forthcoming.

August 3, 2011  01:22 PM ET

Oh he'll be suspended. The league doesnt allow players to chest bump the umps (tongue-twister).

If Yadier intended to spit in Drake's face, wouldn't it be a loogy and not a mist?

August 3, 2011  01:58 PM ET

they should suspend the umpire for missing calls all night Schumaler got screwed a couple of times, plus they keep opening and closing that roof like it is a new toy, the Brewers operate that stadium **** a minor league club, shut the freaking lights off in center field

Denver Bob constantly seems seriously obsessed with a very old LaRussa traffic ticket / get past it / this forum is about baseball / not old traffic citations!

Sometime around the 7th inning as I recall, Drakes' strike zone suddenly expanded to include the oughta be, but is no longer, strike at the letters. He followed that up by obviously squeezing Salas BIG TIME. I'm thinking that had as much to do with Molinas explosion than that lame 3rd strike call, which was probably Drakes' get-even for Molinas' questioning the Salas pitches while behind the plate.

Ya, this one. If it was a big gob of spit on purpose, that's one thing. Some spittle flying while a guy is screaming, not a big deal.
