09:31 AM ET 08.07 | When spring training opened, Roy Oswalt openly discussed the idea of retirement. After leaving his June 23 start in St. Louis after two innings, with his back aching and his future in doubt, retirement seemed a very real option. But as Oswalt prepares today to make his first start in nearly seven weeks, the idea of hanging it up is completely out of his mind.

After this year, the Phillies will use the $2 million buy out and let Oswalt go. With Worley taking his spot as 4th starter.

Really....I'll feel better about Vance Worley after he's been through the league but that boy looks like the real deal...He's got a cocke_y swagger of confidence to him without feeling he's arrogant. Has a real good shot at ROY

AGREED.......8-1 with a sub 3.0 ERA, the kid ROCKS!

I was worried about the number of walks he started out giving up but appears to have that under control....I freakin love watchin him on the mound

Why? Why would the Phils weaken their staff? Money? They'll gain almost $30 million from the expiration of contracts for Ibanez, Blanton, and Lidge, and Dave Montgomery (owner/pres.) has said that the Luxury Tax is not a problem ("Whatever it takes" are his exact words). They will keep Rollins and Madson, too.

I see Oswalt as a liability (injury prone), I like him as a player and appreciate his intensity when he does play, but once again I think he's in decline with all the injuries that keep adding up.....................and if Montgomery is true to his word, let's go after King Felix. I hope they keep Rollins and Madsen, Rollins is a GREAT clubhouse guy and Madsen's turned into a pretty damn good closer, I like Bastardo too, that lefty's 'filthy'......

A filthy Bastardo?

Not trying to rain on the parade but....I believe Philly relievers are great this year because the starters have gone so deep...they haven't been over used...don't get me wrong, they're at the top of the league anyway but if Phillies starters were going only 5 or 6 innings they'd be less effective..and Lidge has been a pleasant surprise since he's come back...I'll be crushed if they don't take it all this year

I would rather have Worley over Oswalt due to injuries. But ROY? No, that will go to Kimbrel or Espinosa.

Kimbrel or Freeman you mean. Worley belongs in the conversation before Espinosa does.

Freeman has snuck up on people because he didn't start well. He's now hitting .299/.364/.479/.843 with an OPS+ of 132. He's also now hitting 3rd and Chipper has been moved down to 5th. It's a changing of the guard. Chipper will never regain the 3rd spot in the order unless Freeman's out of the lineup

"if" he keeps going the way he has been he'll be in contention...since he got started late he'd have to be lights out but it's possible...I know it's a longshot but...

August 7, 2011  01:58 PM ET

"if" Worley keeps doing what he's been doing he should be in contention...I know what you're saying and I know it's a longshot since he didn't start the year with the club but you never know....nobody has been talking about it for good reason but if he only loses 1 or 2 more he'll have to be considered
