Notre Dame's friendly QB battle

09:46 AM ET 08.07 | Dayne Crist walked through the auditorium doors first, followed by Tommy Rees, and the two Notre Dame quarterbacks murmured some words before settling into a couple of chairs without incident. There might have been an incident Saturday. There was discussion about it -- maybe a push, maybe a well-formed scowl. Something to inject a little flavor into a competition where the only friction comes from loose chin straps. "We joke around more saying, I'm going to turn off your alarm so you'll be late for practice," Rees said. "We'll joke about coming in here pretending we're fighting. We have fun with it."

Buckeyes baby.

Dayne Crist was one of two 5* QB prospects in 2008.
Andrew Luck and Landry Jones were lowly 4* further down the list LOL!
We're all still waiting to see Crist develop.

Nah, Rivals could never be wrong.

Colt was a 3* wasn't he?

Not quite...they don't dunk anything entirely...just sprinkle a little.

So this is the Chicago Tribune's version of "going fishing"? Talk about a non story.. Isn't there some story about UNC breaking some rules... or maybe a coach or a few players from tOSU doing something wrong??

As for Crist, this info is off his profile page on und.com. I'd say the young man has done very well with back to back season-ending knee injuries.

Started the first nine games for the Irish before suffering a season-ending ruptured patella tendon against Tulsa ... the injury occurred exactly one-day shy of the one-year anniversary of the torn ACL he suffered against Washington State in 2009 ... completed 59.2% of his passes (174 of 294) for 2,033 yards and 15 touchdowns ... registered a passing efficiency of 129.3 ... has registered 19 completions this season of 20 yards or more ... has completed 64% (64 of 100) of his passes on second down this season ... ranked among the top 30 FBS quarterbacks in total passing yards (14th, 2,033), passing (22nd, 21.75 completions/game) and passing yards per game (27th, 254.13/game) prior to the injury ... threw a touchdown pass in all Notre Dame's first eight games this season and nine straight games overall (which included the 2009 game against Washington State) before the injury .

It's will be Crist bank on it. Kelly's already mentioned the first day of practice that Crist looks sharper than this time last year and has a better understanding of the offense, which he should after a year in it. He also said he wanted to see if he was mobile enough to scramble which he also passed that test. Those comments alone tells me that the senior qb will win the job. Rees will have to fight for that 2nd string.

Hmmmmm... let's see, Dayne Crist-- 4-5 as a starter last year with losses to Navy, Tulsa and Michigan... or Tommy Rees, who went undefeated against in 4 consecutive games including USC, Utah, and Miami in Notre Dame's first legit Bowl Win in 20 years. Maybe Notre Dame coaches should trademark the term "No Brainer" and use it as the theme for the 2011 season. At least put it on some Irish T-shirts.

Crist will get the nod.

QUOTE(#17):

In Austin last year we had a highly touted 5* take over after an over-achieving 3* graduated. I'm getting somewhat skeptical of these "*" ratings.

ND was going the other direction. When Rees took over, it wasn't pretty but the kid kept getting better. It's too bad that they are going to give it back to Crist as it would be interesting to see Rees keep developing. He still may get a shot because if it wasn't for bad luck, Crist would have none at all.
