Time running out for Quade and Henry

08:11 AM ET 08.08 | A former Cubs manager, Dusty Baker, has the back of the current skipper, Mike Quade. "In order to build something, you've got to have some consistency and give it some time, because every time you change, you've got to start all over again in rebuilding it. I'd like to see Quade get some time here." Quade's time may be running out, despite a seven-game winning streak that ended Sunday in an 8-7 loss to Baker's Reds. ... With the loss, the Cubs fell to 49-66 and trail the NL Central-leading Brewers by 16 games. Though they've been playing much better over the past week, it hasn't helped quell speculation that general manager Jim Hendry and Quade may be toast after the season.

ANOTHER manager change for the Cubs........Does this surprise anyone?

August 8, 2011  08:33 AM ET

The Cubs are so bad that they make Ernie Banks frown.
"It looks like rain at the Friendly Confines, let's play zero" is his new catchphrase.

Why would they only give him one year? They couldn't have expected much this year with the roster he inherited. If you aren't going to give him at least two or three years, why hire him in the first place?

Cubs are a joke

It begins and ends with the ownership and the top level management. Discussion over

Toast them now damnit!!! Get Sandberg in here stat, and bring in Pat Gillick - what the heck, it can't get any worse, we haven't won a pennant in almost 70 years, so it's time to do something drastic, like bringing in people who know the game and how to win at it!!!

As long as Hendry is the GM, the Cubs are going nowhere.

August 8, 2011  11:54 AM ET

Truly disappointing as a Cubs fan. They had a chance to start fresh with Sandberg and make everyone happy, instead they've driven him to the best organization in the NL (Phillies) and now I don't think they'll ever get him back. Hendry should be gone (trading half there prospects for Garza? Do you really think Tampa would have traded him if they felt he was a stud pitcher going forward: see Scott Kazmir). Develop your talent from within, spend your money wisely. Stop bringing in overpriced/underperforming veterans that are cast offs of winning organizations (ie.Soriano/Yankees knew early on he was a free swinger who can't perform in the clutch, Cubs were suckers to pay him what they did).
Let's go Cubs ownership, smarten up. Dump Hendry and bring in a smart, shrewd young GM and end the 100+ years of futility on the North Side.

I would like to see the Cubs take a page out of Florida's playbook:bring in your top minor league players who are hungry and that other teams know nothing about. Soriano, Soto, Hill, Ramirez,
Pena, Wells, Marmol, Grabow, Marshall, Wood, Dempster GONE, and keep Marlon Byrd because of the effort he gives in the outfield every game.

Cause he was Hendry's pick and if he's toast so is Quade. I mean seriously its time to blow it up, the moves they made a few years ago to try to win failed in the end.

Now the new owner is stuck with the bill (Soriano), declining attendance and a stadium in need of 250mill+ in renovations. Bet he's wishing he'd have keep out of this mess.

And how is giving Sandberg this **** job "starting fresh"? Just setting him up for failure, then he'd be stuck with the label of crappy manager too. They did him a favor not offering him this job.

You'd get rid of Wood? Seriously?! He gives 100 percent AND he gave the team a hometown discount and you'd oust him? Wow.

Quade was a mistake from the beginning, but letting Hendry have this long with this team is absolutely ridiculous. Fire them both and make it a requirement for the next GM that he bring Ryne on as skipper.

It's never easy to blow up a franchise in a major market. There are a couple ways to do it. The wrong way is always the Ed Wade way. Let's hope Chicago doesn't go that route.

August 8, 2011  01:54 PM ET

quade most go back to the minors,,, and regain some more experience!!

August 8, 2011  02:18 PM ET

The Cubs need a GM change more than another manager change.

This discussion isn't over until we say it's over!

August 8, 2011  03:27 PM ET

I say stay the course. Keep both Hendry and Quade. It's obvious they are making progress! Any problems in the past was not their fault. It was because of the black cat that crossed Santo's path, Sam Sianis' goat curse, Fred Merkle's curse, Wrigleyville not allowing more night games, and Steve Bartman, who wasn't smart enough to let Moises Alou catch a foul ball without interfering.

August 8, 2011  03:51 PM ET

I think Jim Hendry has flown under the radar for quite a few years simply because Omar Minaya was such an obvious choice as the worst GM in MLB. Now that the Mets have finally purged Minaya from their ranks, Hendry can no longer hide. He has repeatedly missed on free agents and the organization has not done a very good job of developing talent either. He certainly needs to go. Ultimately that could spell the end of Quade too, but perhaps not right away. The new GM might think that Quade is a good guy to preside over the first couple of years of the rebuilding effort.

'Sports Know It All', you may be right about Sandberg, it probably did do him a favour to not get this job (he may be groomed as Charlie Manuel's eventual successor in Philly). However, saying that, I think he would have brought a different atmosphere to these lazy bunch of slugs and if he wasn't getting the response from the players he wanted, he probably would have had more influence perhaps on the players they brought in henceforth. Obviously they are stuck with some of the dead weight they have. I can't imagine however, even though Ryno appears a calm guy, that would put up with the childish nonsense a la Zambrano. He is a no-nonsense kind of guy and he has had success with every team he's managed. Guess we'll never know now what he could have done in Chicago......
