08:20 AM ET 08.08 | Reportedly as a direct result of an unfavorable lease agreement, Columbus is hemorrhaging money. More than two years after going public with their financial problems, the Blue Jackets appear to be in substantive talks toward an agreement that would help offset staggering losses due in part to the club's lease agreement with Nationwide Arena. It is likely, sources told The Dispatch, that a portion of the revenues generated by the Hollywood Casino Columbus on the West Side will be used to help the Blue Jackets. ... [Said John P. McConnell:] "If this doesn't work ... you know, I really don't have any options other than staying the owner as the team is moved."

Another move for the NHL.

Bet you anything they end up moving....

The Blue Jackets will end up moving to Canada, there is no doubt about it.

Even money on that one, Canuck.

Maybe the jackets would've done better in Cleveland, a city that identifies itself as a Northeastern city, instead of a college town like Columbus? Just saying, NHL.

Lets just hope they go like Atlanta and not like Phoenix if they have to go.

August 8, 2011  08:43 AM ET

Another fine placement for the Buttgoblin ! Let's see know. Phoenix,Dallas,Atlanta,Florida,Tampa, and now Columbus is in trouble.Clearly the Buttgoblins expansion and "cost certainty" formulas aren't working. Hockey is a regional sport.Close some of them and move the viable teams to Hamilton & Quebec because the only thing the Buttgoblin is doing now is wiping egg off his face while his expansion owners are bleeding money !!

Morning Otis?

Someone getting married?

August 8, 2011  08:55 AM ET

Memphis! San Antonio! Tucson! Aspen! Charlotte! All these places would create in-state rivalries, and from what I hear on inside knowledge, that has become Bettman's primary focus now when it comes to moving franchises! Heck, I hear two might move to Tegucigalpa in time for 2012-13 season! How many more exclamation points can I squeeze in here?!

Seriously though, how pathetic is it that the only news we can depend on daily about the NHL is failing franchises moving?

Buttgoblin is worse than frigging Selig !! Not easy to do

August 8, 2011  09:07 AM ET

Tampa wasn't part of The Weasel's expansion - They came in under John Ziegler; same year as the Ottawa Senators...And they aren't in financial trouble, per se.

They may not have sold as many tickets in recent years (under Kroules, Barrie and Lawton's mismanagement - Ending up in the cellar, year after year, has that effect; unless you're the Leafs) but Jeff Vinik has deep pockets and has already said he'd ride it out for a decade or more.

Hiring Stevie Yzerman will go a long way toward ensuring the Lightning's long-term viability. There's no substitute for winning, and Yzerman's job is to build a winning culture.

I'd be more concerned about the other teams mentioned (though the Panthers' ownership seem to be taking the long-view and aren't panicked for revenue, just yet.)

Phoenix is definitely beyond being on its' last legs - This will be the third season for that club on "life-support". It's bound to crash and burn.

If Selig, Stern and the Buttgoblin ran for office, None of the above would win in a landslide.

August 8, 2011  09:31 AM ET

Bring them to Toronto. We need a real team.

August 8, 2011  10:25 AM ET

Bluejackets, how can we miss you if you won't go away.

August 8, 2011  10:26 AM ET

Any problems Dallas may have have nothing to do with fan support. It's our idiot owner and his other business dealings. At least he doesnt own the Rangers anymore.

Columbus is a good example of a second ... make that a third-tier city that wants to be a "major league city" in the worst way. That's exactly how they did it. All the "arena district" has done is kill off business in the other parts of town, much as how Easton and the like did to the older "northland - eastland" business areas. Net gain was little or nothing.

Maybe they can pass the team off on some suckers in Hartford.
