There's no question every reporter and columnist in town is pulling for the Dodgers and their amazing comeback. The Lakers and Clippers are locked out, so go, Dodgers, go. "Realistically," [Don Mattingly] says somewhat unrealistically, "we've got to go out now and win four out of five all the time. If we can do that over a period of time and creep a little bit, you never know." Mattingly knows what it takes, all right. He played for the Yankees for 14 seasons, and in that time the Yankees went to the playoffs once. ... Mattingly's goal now, he says, "is to win every day." The Dodgers lost Monday night.

They're ten games back.
According to baseballprospectus.com, as of this morning, the Dodgers have a 0.3% chance of making the playoffs. Those are not good odds.
However, they do play in a garbage division, so I suppose anything is possible.

And this is why MLB will expand wild card playoff teams. How else can you convince fans that a team that is 10 games UNDER .500 with the 13th worst record in the NL is a contender and you should pay big bucks to go watch them play?

Indeed it did. And as has been repeatedly pointed out quite rationally any team in baseball, except the Cubs, who make it to the playoffs can win the World Series. Say a few novenas, ride a hot staff, and bingo, you get a ring. The point is the Giants wouldn't have made the playoffs if they had to play an imbalanced schedule against major league quality teams.

What's wrong with having a goal of winning every day? Nothing in my opinion. If somebody's not going out there as a pro with that desire then you are selling yourself short and your fans as well.
