08:31 AM ET 08.09 | Turns out he can carve with his words, too. Upon his arrival in Russia to begin his two-year contract with the KHL team Atlant Mytischi, Alex Kovalev took aim at the National Hockey League, and in particular Ottawa, where he spent most of the past two seasons, compiling 32 goals and 44 assists in 131 games. At the 2011 trade deadline, Kovalev was dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins, for whom he had two goals and five assists in 20 games. During an interview with [Sovetsky Sport], Kovalev thrashed both Ottawa sports writers -- "They don't watch hockey at all. When they fly with the team and go through the [metal detector] at an airport, their bags are filled with beer" -- and former coach Cory Clouston: "In two seasons I still couldn't understand the ideas of our coach Cory Clouston."

"In two seasons I still couldn't understand the ideas of our coach Cory Clouston."

Apparently you weren't alone Alex.

You don't need to understand anything your coach tells you to float around, Alex.

And I have nothing against the idea of bringing some beers with you on the plane....

August 9, 2011  09:23 AM ET

Why would the sports writers have to bring beer on the team charter? I can't imagine flying a bunch of hockey players anywhere without having an ample supply of beer.

On the other point, I think you have to listen to what the coach is saying before you can say that you don't understand his ideas. I don't think Kovy ever bothered to even listen to Clouston.

Is it me or does Kovy sound like a little kid who was just sent to his room?

in all seriousness, I think that this is most probably yet another one of those incredibly stupid and exagerated russian 'news' stories aimed at pumping their own tired and trying to make themselves (and the KHL) look good.

In a sense, it's no different than the rockstar that shows up in a new city every night and proclaims THAT city to be the very best city that they EVER had the pleasure of performing in. Deep down, the fans know that it's completely insencere...but they eat it up anyways. So in the same line 'hockey writers in canada don't know abything about hockey, you russian writers are the only ones that know'. The media is happy, the fans there are happy, they feel validated.

How many of them are going to realise they have been hosed when Kovalev is a top 10 league scorer even though he showed pretty convincingly that the only reason he was being kept at the pro level on this side of the pond was because of the enormity of his contract?

What he meant is that beers are clunky, space consuming and heavy. He was praising the russian media for thinking of travelling with jugs of vodka instead.

It's a well known fact that Russian planes are fueled with Vodka as are their pilots.

...Well. Other than the fact that he's a total dog, I think he just torpedoed even the slimmest hope of ever returning to the NHL.

No great loss. We hate you too, Alexei. Stay gone, please.

August 9, 2011  11:37 AM ET

Interpreter, oh, interpreter, and of course we don't lingo them either, with a personal apology to Datsyuk, 'cause I try.

August 9, 2011  12:10 PM ET

hmmmmmmm both of the NHL's greatest, heartless floaters are named Alexi (Yashin & Kovalev) and both played for the Senators at one time. I smell conspiracy!!

Ya, I was gonna go this route. But Kovalev is a much easier target than Clouston. At least Clouston had some drive and passion. Kovalev still woulda wandered around the ice like a figure skater, had he understood anything or not.
