Red Sox courting shortstop controversy

08:11 AM ET 08.10 | Jed Lowrie is back, and with his return come questions about Marco Scutato. Scutaro, who banged out four hits Sunday night against the Yankees, added three more in the Red Sox' wild 8-6 win over the Minnesota Twins. What's a manager to do? ... The two aren't merely competing for the starting job the rest of the way, but also, the job next season. Top prospect Jose Iglesias hasn't shown he can hit Triple A pitching, never mind major league pitching, and probably needs additional seasoning at Pawtucket. Even his defensive game, sparkling as it can be on occasion, requires some refinement. Francona, for now, isn't tipping his hand. "We can kind of split it up," he said of the shortstop job.

As long as Scutaro keeps hitting, the job can be his...but I do like the idea of a platoon with Lowrie. And CSNNE is right...Iglesias is in need of more time in Pawtucket.

Morning barkeep.

Lowrie can play third and second as well as SS. When he is healthy he is a valuable player, and when he is hitting as he was earlier in the season he needs to be on the field.
Somehow, I don't see this situation as a problem for the Sox right now. Scutaro's contract is up at the end of the season I think, then it's Theo's problem as to whether to spend the money to resign him. If the kid in Pawtucket isn't ready to step up to the majors, and may never be ready, then isn't it a bit of a no-brainer?

There is a player option for Scutaro in 2012 for $6 million. The buyout would be $1.5 million.

Well, guess the Red Sox will be saving some money when they cut Scutaro.

I thought that guy's problem was that he couldnt hit? Lowrie cant field but he makes up for it with the stick.

Put Scutaro on waivers, we'll take him. We were interested b4 the season started- Casilla isnt the answer, Nishioka belongs @ 2b.

yep, Scutaro is hot right now, might as well ride him till he starts to suck again. Shouldn't take to long.

If Scutaro finishes the season playing at the level he has achieved this past month, then it will be a tough call for Theo.
However, $6 Mill is a lot of money, so perhaps they take try to renegotiate for a two/three year deal at less annual cost, and pass on him if he won't renegotiate.
Then see what interest he finds elsewhere, perhaps re-sign him if he finds little interest elsewhere at the money he may want.

True. And, Lowrie is a good utility guy. It'll be a couple years before Iglesias is called up, so ride them both. I'm sure Scut will need surgery again soon anyhow. And, one more foul off his foot and Petey's watching the rest of the season - again.

i thought they already had a SS in Scutaro.
