Kelly trying to toughen up Notre Dame

08:23 AM ET 08.11 | Brian Kelly got in touch with his smash-mouth side Wednesday. The second-year Notre Dame head football coach downshifted out of the frenetic tempo, that caused culture shock for Notre Dame football fans last fall and mental whiplash for the Irish players a year ago, into a more deliberate, uber-physical mode. "We called it 'building a toughness with our football team,'" Kelly puffed Wednesday. "We know we can play fast. We know we can spread it out. (But) we want to really have our guys focus this week on our toughness as a football team." ... [Determining] the top backups is where most of the ND position battles are just five days into fall camp and one day into full-pad work. Outside of the Dayne Crist/Tommy Rees quarterback duel, there are few depth-chart tussles that involve a starter.

If you have players that are on your team at this level and you are worried about toughness. You my friend have a bigger problem.

Odd premise-its not like Cincy was known for toughness-it was a skill/speed team.

That is what I was thinkin' Neb....I would think toughness would be considered when you recruit.

My coaches in college said, " If I have to worry about your toughness as a player then maybe I should start by looking at your want to as a member of this team ".

Good for them, they've needed real coaching like that for a long time. However, there are only 2 teams I can't stand: ND and FU (how we refer to UF). So I enjoy watching them fail... especially when they think they're getting better. Lets just remember the last FSU vs ND matchup in South Bend... shall we? FSU 37 - ND 0 and that was with a Jeff Bowden coached offense with QB Chris Rix at the helm. Ask any FSU fan how they feel about the two of them. Not so good. Imagine the drubbing they would get today. Priceless!
