Bobby Petrino's abrupt resignation from the Falcons capped a week of intense meetings and maneuvers that included calls from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, a late-night meeting at Blank's Buckhead home and a private plane sent to take Petrino away. afternoon and told the Falcons owner he had gotten a call from the chairman of the board at Arkansas. The school wanted permission to speak to Petrino, Blank said. "I almost dropped the phone," Blank said. "From my perspective, the answer is no," Blank said he told Jones. But Blank told Jones to call Rich McKay, the Falcons' president and general manager, for a formal answer. On Friday, Petrino called Blank to tell him he was thinking of returning to college coaching. Frank Broyles, who was in Atlanta on Wednesday on unrelated business, told the Journal-Constitution about Jones' contact with Blank. "What I have heard is that [Jones and Blank] are good friends," Broyles said. "I was told Jerry got permission from Arthur Blank. Jerry talked to Arthur to get an interview. What happened after that, I don't know." Blank and McKay both said Wednesday they never granted that permission.

This is a direct contradiction of Blank's statement in the same paper that the Falcon's were never contacted by anyone regarding the interest in Petrino! Something in the milk ain't clean!

I think it's Jerry J who isn't clean, a lil conflict of interest.

My head hurts too much after reading that article.

If that is the case it will be revealed at the rate the ugliness of this story is unfolding! I would hope that J.Jones isn't involved in anyway compromising to his reputation as a respected owner and businessman!

What a guy......

December 13, 2007  08:00 AM ET

Jones did Blank a favor.

Theres a shock.

Cowboystar has it right.

Even a casual examination of the public comments of Arthur Blank on most any subject will yield wildly divergent stories.

Long time observers of the Home Depot story would not be surprised....

December 13, 2007  08:21 AM ET

Has there ever been an owner that's had a worse year than Blank?

December 13, 2007  08:27 AM ET

Petrino had no respect from the players anyway. They are better off without him. He's a rat. He may do alright at Arkansas, but they will never win a championship.

December 13, 2007  08:29 AM ET

Jerry is a pig. Really, deep down he's a big red swine. Soooooeeey

December 13, 2007  08:30 AM ET

Jerry needs to worry about the Patriots.....48-27..

December 13, 2007  08:30 AM ET

he tosses the grenade into the bushes and jumps into the slit trench...

December 13, 2007  08:34 AM ET

If he asked for permission and that was that, then there isn't a problem. If Arkansas talked to him and JJ (that's what I like to call him) had nothing to do with it after that he is clean...albeit, he is tarnished and put in a bad place.

Either way, this is going to get UGLY!!

December 13, 2007  08:40 AM ET

Your on the wrong thread for traps Bob, no Cowboy fan is taking a fall for Jerry.

Such a non-story.....so what if a nothing coach quits a team?

December 13, 2007  08:50 AM ET

What the heck is Jerry Jones doing fronting for Arkansas when it involves a head coach from another NFL team? Guy thinks he's the ambassador of the NFL.

December 13, 2007  08:56 AM ET

Hmmmm? It would be funny if the NFL charged Jones with tampering and the Cowboys had to forfiet a draft pic......come on, you got to see the humor in that..

Imagine how outraged Jerry "Joan Rivers" Jones would be if another owner helped facilitate a Cowboys coach's exit. Granted it's good for the Falcons that Petrino bolted but that doesn't mean Jones needed to stick his reconstructed nose into the situation.
