09:41 AM ET 12.13 | Barring an unexpectedly quick rehabilitation, goalie Manny Fernandez' first year as a Bruin ended yesterday when he underwent surgery to repair a torn MCL in his left knee. Fernandez first suffered the injury last season while with the Minnesota Wild, but it continued to bother him and has affected his play since training camp. "It's a relief, because we know he's going to be in shape for next year," B's general manager Peter Chiarelli said last night before his team's 4-3 win over the Thrashers. "It's likely that he'll be gone the whole year, maybe not, but he'll be ready for next year.

I wouldn't go as far as to call him a waste...I think because the rest of your tenders are playing well it makes it easier to write him off. There is still plenty enough hockey to be played and the B's GAA could very easily increase significantly.

At least the Bruins now know that he won't be around and can move forward. By placing him on IR it frees up part of his $4million contract which allows them to seek help at other areas. May also have some salary cap money from Bergeron being placed on IR to use.

Like I said before . . . .he's too old to recover until next season and beyond perhaps , his contract may get in the way of the B's trying to upgrade as the season progresses . . . . .look for Fernandez to retire . . . .he's a gonner

isn't he still on contract for next year as well? Well at the worst he provided Timmy with some additional motivation to come to camp in great condition and ready to prove he is a #1 starter in this league.
