Ferguson defends De Gea's mistakes

10:27 AM ET 08.15 | Sir Alex Ferguson defended young GK David De Gea after Manchester United bailed out their accident-prone keeper for the second week running. United needed an 81st-minute own goal from Steven Reid to open their title defence with a win after De Gea's howler gifted Shane Long's debut equaliser to West Brom. Fergie claimed De Gea was subjected to a "ridiculous aerial assault" from WBA, but admitted: "It was a slack goal to lose. David should have done better, his concentration cost him the goal."

First!

A few thoughts:

1. Cesc deal finally done. Whatta relief.... I feel like I just took a huge dump after eating way too much cheese washed down with beer, going to sleep, then waking up and drinking a huge cup of coffee.

2. Barcelona gets it done on the road. Not beautiful football by any means.... but they forced a tie with what little opportunity Real gave them. That Villa goal was awesome!! New Qatari Cartel kits look awful.

3. DCU lays the smack down even though Vancouver has 12 on the field (counting ref). CD9 gets straight up mugged then gets a yellow for dissent when the ref swallows his whistle. Willis leapfrogs Cronin in GK pecking order.

4. Bayern fortunate to get 3 points. That Wolfsburg goal was legit.

On-topic: Tim Howard on line 1....

So when exactly did LAG and SKC decide to reschedule their match that was supposed to be this Saturday? Totally screwed my fantasy team....

August 15, 2011  10:39 AM ET

Ouch. La Liga teams carry a combined debt of 4 BILLION EURO. Looks like Spanish sides have been hiring former Lehmann Brothers employees.

That being said, over 200 pros in La Liga and La Liga B are not receiving paychecks and a player strike is on the way. Match Day 1 and 2 look to be sacrificed. Let's hope for La Liga's sake they adopt the German system and punish these clubs with a license forfeiture.

Also of interest, Mr. Huntelaar records a hat-trick against Podolski's lowly Koeln and are we really going to see 1860 in the Bundesliga next year? 4-0 and 5-0 wins in their last two matches of the season say yes.

Ok... a win is a win... but dude dove for a ball he didn't need to dive for, and to make it worse, he dove over it.

Shouldn't. I had 3 LAG players on my roster and my subs' points were automatically counted instead.

Good point.... but I often hit the bargain bin for my bench players. Oh well....

"who can I get for $3.70 for defense... Carlos Valderrama still play? He's rated at 3.40, so I'll have 30 cents left over. Perfect."

So much for financial fair play. Could they [i]all[/a] be kicked out of Euro competitions?

La liga the new SPL indeed!

Thoughts from this weekend:

1. United got young overnight, and the kids (other than Welbeck) are looking good. De Gea will be fine, but he's certainly feeling the heat.
2. Enjoyable game yesterday. Not sure what game Zarco was watching, but it was back and forth with Madrid really dominating the game if not posession.
3. Alcantara worries me waaaay more than Sanchez or Cesc. Barca has serious issues at CB if either Pique or Puyol pick up knocks this year. If not for some Valdes heroics, that game could have gotten ugly early.
4. I'm sad that things didn't work out well with JPA at LAG, I really thought he'd do well for us. That being said, we're top of the table with Chad **** Barrett as our most effective striker to date. We're going to be flat out scary by MLS standards with Robbie.

I think Nike made it cuz no one is buying the current kit with that stupid green bar.

Nike put that sheet on the shoulders on all their kits this year. Pointless.... just like previous year's small stripe on the bottom of the sleeves.

yet... far better than 3 stripes down the arms, often down the side seams, and down the seams of the shorts.... and on the socks...
