Johnson, Titans not even at a starting point

08:03 AM ET 08.16 | A Monday tweet suggested Chris Johnson was looking for more than $10M a year -- but, either way, the parties aren't close. The two sides remain in a stalemate because the Titans still refuse to make an offer and Johnson has dug in with his stance that he won't show up until he gets one. And right now, there's no end in sight. ... [Johnson] considers himself to be in a different class than those players previously mentioned, and he should. No one in the NFL has rushed for more yards in the past three seasons. So it could take paying Johnson as one of the game's "elite" players -- not just the top running back -- to get him to camp. Some would argue he deserves to be in that category, while others disagree. It's an interesting debate. Right now, the two sides aren't even at a starting point.

Holdouts typically do not end well. The player comes back in sub-optimal shape, gets hurt because of it, and has a below average season.

Did anybody catch the Titans preseason game? Locker looked good (I know it's only preseason) but really how weird did Hasselbeck look in powder blue?

I can't understand why they're alienating this guy. He's pretty much all they've got.

It is, but now try putting "Johnson" into the mix in a way that won't offend the mods.

Didn't they say last week that they had made him an offer that would make him happy? And didn't he say that he hadn't heard from them?
There's a disconnect here somewhere. Maybe they need a new cell phone plan.

Abolsutely correct. Something in the vein of making him the highest paid running back. Johnson awaits the call.

The announcers babbled something about this at halftime last night, he doesn't want to be the highest paid RB, he wants to be the highest paid player in the league, around 13M /yr

The problem with paying RB's so much money is that with the exception of a few they historically have short careers. They usually have 1-2 good seans and then quickly go downhill from there.
The Titans could pay him the $12-13 million per year he wants but its the length that could bite them in the ass.

Dumb move. Take the highest-paid-running-back offer, make sure it's front-loaded, and see how many years you can play. Holding out for Peyton Manning money with the new lower salary cap is going to mean no paychecks at all.

Johnson could wind up catching swing passes from Carson Palmer in the all-unemployed game.
