Reports: Kiffin wanted Arkansas job

Raiders coach Lane Kiffin probably thought Falcons coach Bobby Petrino resigning Tuesday to take the Arkansas job officially would end speculation Kiffin wanted the job. Wrong. Reports on Wednesday had Kiffin angry he didn't get the job. One said Kiffin was so upset that he slammed doors and cursed. Then again, he might have just watched film of Sunday's 38-7 loss at Green Bay.

If I was coaching the Raiders I would br cursing alot too..

Kiffin to UCLA.

I may be cursing a lot as Raiders coach, but I would not be thinking Arkansas as my outlet. Kiffin is a lot smarter than that. Do you honestly think he (as did the rest of the world) did not know that Nutt was out at Arkansas last year? After Mustain and their top receiver left for USC (just read the AU blogs) everyone and thier mother knew Nutt was out after the 2007 season. If Kiffin wanted the AU job, he would have chilled in the college ranks for another year and went for it. Does this menas he enjoys being the coach at my Raiders (I also went to USC), no it does not.

(If they can't get Chow.)

Is college that much easier than the NFL that everybody wants to get the hell out? Why the hell do they take NFL jobs to begin with? You're just as likely to get fired at these schools as you are in the NFL. And the NFL pays more. I think college would be a pain in the **** sometimes trying to answer to the boosters and trying to keep them away from your athletes so your program doesn't end up with restrictions.

Jabril - or maybe he would have gone to the NFL to get that fat check, knowing that he could easily jump back to college as soon as the opportunity presented itself. Thank you Nick Saban.

the honeymoon didnt last long in oakland.

December 14, 2007  11:11 AM ET

You'll never see Bill Belichick leave the NFL for college. That guy's professional grade, all the way.

December 14, 2007  11:30 AM ET

If this is true Al Davis needs to fire this bum immediately. As a longtime suffering Raiders fan we do not need pathetic excuses for coaches running our team. Stupid little baby wants to throw a fit because he doesn't get the Arkansas job!?! What a pathetic little biiatch!

December 14, 2007  12:06 PM ET

Dealing with adult professionals is entirely different than college kids. For a new NFL coach, I'd look at a top CFL coach or successful NFL assistant. There is no reason to keep recycling has beens and loosers.

December 14, 2007  12:24 PM ET

What annoys me is that these 80's babies coaches don't need a minority internship program to break in to the game, they don't need to politic and be a GA traveling all over before they can even make enough money to live. Kiffin like many others popping up are BORN into this because their fathers can make phone calls for them so that they can be barely out of undergrad and start their careers at prominent D1 level programs for the best exposure and experience. Now, I don't know the level of truth to this story but cry me a friggin river, you can barely pee straight are a head coach of an NFL team. Get over it, impress the rest of us and work through some adversity. College/NFL coaching isn't going anywhere and it's safe to say plenty of coaches will get fired so you can have a chance to send the moving vans to Oakland.

December 14, 2007  12:24 PM ET

Honestly, is dealing with rich boosters any worse than dealing with Al Davis? How many coaches has Davis offered that job to and been told "No thanks!"?

December 14, 2007  01:03 PM ET

It is no way Al Davis would have just let Kiffin walk out on the Raiders and the contract he signed. Jerry Jones would have had to give Al a bunch of money to make that one happen. When Al fired callahan a few years ago,the Te coach wanted to go with callahan to Nebraska. Al would not release him from his contract until Nebraska paid Al some money. Also remember Al traded Gruden to Tampa for cash and draft picks. Al does not let people just leave without his pockets getting lined.

"Is college that much easier than the NFL that everybody wants to get the hell out? Why the hell do they take NFL jobs to begin with?"

Thats generally a trend you only see with the fresh out of college coaching types. I imagine the money is fairly alluring. That, and possibly being known as the person who turned a team around.

December 14, 2007  01:23 PM ET

I am a very realistic Raider fan and can understand Lane being upset about not landing a job back in college, no doubt. But upset about not getting the Arkansas job? That's a blessing coach. Please don't leave us right now by the way. Things are more positive in Oakland than they have been in years.

December 14, 2007  02:28 PM ET

Please, please, please let this not be true. Kiffin has turned this team around in terms of desire to win football games. We cannot afford to lose him.

December 14, 2007  04:04 PM ET

This story is utter BS. The writer originally claims it was from an unnamed "industry source". LOL. Listen if you are going to print anonymous sources, just tell the truth and say you made it up, jackass.

December 14, 2007  07:43 PM ET

Belicheck would have a tough time recruiting in college despite his NFL success.

After he left a recruit's house:
"Mom, dad, what do you think?"
"Son, why do you want to play for Frankenstein?"

December 14, 2007  08:12 PM ET

I would want to get the hell out of Oakland as quickly as possible too

It's the retirement community of the NFL
