07:55 AM ET 08.17 | What is Ron Rivera waiting for? Maybe [Rivera] likes intrigue. Hey, coach, who're you going to start in the regular season opener against Arizona? I'm not telling, Rivera will say with a smile, or a pat on the back for the reporter asking the question, or, on Monday, with both. Rivera said Monday he plans to announce a regular season starter before next week's exhibition at Cincinnati. He can drag out the mystery if he chooses. Long practices probably bore coaches, too. But there is no mystery. Although the announcement has yet to come, Cam Newton will start at quarterback against the Cardinals. ... Second-year quarterback Jimmy Clausen is not ready. I thought he would be. But I was wrong.

I think Cam is one who would do well to start as a rookie. Some don't, but I think he can.

Newton or Clausen? Hmmm... At least it's not Henne or Moore!

One game, especially the first pre-season game, is not enough of a test. Defenses are going to throw the kitchen sink at him once the season starts. We'll see how he holds up. I think he'll be fine, eventually, but it is too early to tell at this point.

Raise your hand if you actually thought that after last years debacle they would NOT start him? They need fans in the seets and Pretty Boy Clausen isn't going to do it.

seats..

August 17, 2011  08:24 AM ET

Wow, could they get the number 1 pick two years in a row? And would they use it for another quarterback?

They're setting it up in case Gruden takes the job next season.

And serve as an immediate impact.

Word to Big Bird.

I agree. I think he would do well too. Plus, what do the Panthers really have to lose? You drafted him to be the franchise, and he could actually bring fans into the stadium.

Any team that starts a rookie QB has not been paying attention. All that money and some kids career thrown to the wolves. What a waste.

But sometimes...Bradford has worked out for the Rams. Stafford looked very good last year when he wasn't wearing an open-back hospital gown. Even though Sanchez isn't very good himself, overall his team has done well around him.

I believe he has a chance, slim but still a chance........okay I'm lying.

There is a lot to lose... sometimes guys aren't mentally prepared to be thrown to the wolves... whether Cam is or not is yet to be seen, but throwing him out there before he is ready could completely ruin this kids career and cost the Panthers tons of money for nothing... So like I said potentially there is a lot to lose.

On a side note, I still think Clausen is gonna be a good QB at some point and really wasn't given much of a chance. I also bet that we see this exact situation play out next year with Andy Dalton filling Clausens shoes and Andrew Luck in Newtons.

Bradford ran a pro-style offense in college. Newton ran a spread where the plays were numbered for him. And then he just pulled the ball down and ran with it anyway. He's gonna throw an epic number of picks if he starts.

Also didn't anyone see Newton on Gruden's QB camp.. guy said Auburn had him run like 9 plays... far cry short of the 900 or so pages in the Panthers playbook. Not saying the kid won't be good one day, but it will most likely take a couple of seasons for him to get up to speed.

IT will be Cam. Trial by fire. The fans are already excited about it. Don't make anyone sit through a game with Clausen at the the helm. He is terrible.

Exactly. He just called "#8" in the huddle. That doesn't work in the pros. He's just got waaaayyyyy to much to learn to be ready for opening day as anything but a wildcat QB with a handfull of plays. As for Claussen, I think he's got potential, but he needs to carry a clip board for another season as well to learn the pro game.
