Thome may yet land in a pennant race

08:05 AM ET 08.17 | The Twins gave the newest member of the 600-homer club a rest Tuesday, and Jim Thome can now turn his attention to other matters. As much as Thome doesn't want to address it, the possibility that he could end up in a pennant race -- with another team -- exists. With the Aug. 31 trade deadline approaching, a team looking for some lefthanded punch could be interested in acquiring Thome for the stretch drive. And Thome wants to win. ... If Thome clears waivers, the Phillies, Angels and Indians could be among teams interested in dealing for him. All three are in pennant races. He played for the Phillies from 2003 to '05, and he broke in with Cleveland in 1991 and was there until 2002.

Wow. Hat's off to Thome on reaching 600, still a talented player, would be great to see him back in a Phillies uniform.

He'll never clear waivers for the Phillies to get him, he still brings too much to a team, especially an AL team who needs a DH

Congrats to him for hitting # 600.

he said some really nice things about Charlie Manuel during his postgame press conference. the guy is a class act...ANY team (NL or AL) would be lucky to have him.

Thome's back doesn't allow him to play 1B anymore so his value to a NL team would be limited to a pinch hitter.

Indeed! And, 600 without a whiff of steroids anywhere near him unlike ARoid, Barry Bighead or Sammy Syringe.

Love Thome here in Minny but I think he definitely deserves a chance to win a WS

August 17, 2011  09:47 AM ET

It would be nice to see him finish his career back with the Tribe.

Congrats to Jimmy ! Class act for years !

he had a chance to do so and lost

If he leaves the Twins, he must go to an AL team because he simply can't play 1B anymore. Still, he's a power hitter who can come off the bench as a DH or PH and deliver. Of course, I don't think Cleveland will win the WS; they will have problems with either NY or Boston, and the Phillies are just a better team than the Indians. Still, I'd like to see Thome get one final shot at a WS, since I think this will be his last year. His only other goal is to pass Sosa, but he'll need another part of a year for that.

Good for him to reach 600. A prolific HR hitter.

Twice. I agree with everyone that Thome's a nice guy & cant play 1b anymore. I'd like to see him go to the tribe to finish his career where it started. It's what he was saying last year along w Manny. But I dont see the Twins making 2 trades within their division in the same year.

Congrates Thome my homie on making the 600 club! Without a whiff of steroids in the darkest period of baseball, a true Hall of Famer!

Posnanski's column on Thome yesterday was brilliant, simply brilliant. Love to see Thome go out with a last chance at a ring.

Posnanski is a child molester.

I think Thome's 600 HR pursuit was one of the most under reported pursuit of a major milestone I've ever seen. Nothing like the 9 months of coverage on Jeter getting 3,000 hits. Nice job ESPN. Nobody would ever lose underestimating ESPN.

wherever thome goes after the twins franchise most likely he's new role will be as a pinch hitter nothing more nothing less, in other words for thome would be better to remain with the twins to finish this season, now if the twins had trade thome before he reached the 600 homerun record then perhaps he could had better options, but not any more!!

Likewise, but with Hafner on the team, it's just not going to happen. Can they really carry two left-handed DH's?

That's a very good point.

That was a fantastic read. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
