Gabbert on fast track to starting

08:05 AM ET 08.18 | After five days of practice, Jack Del Rio was gushing over Blaine Gabbert, and his trajectory, according to some, has face-of-the-franchise potential. [Gabbert] downplayed his increased repetitions with the first-team offense, but that is just his style. The reality is, the Jaguars have a very real quarterback competition. David Garrard is still in the lead and will start Friday against the Atlanta Falcons. ... But Garrard's grip on the starting job is not as definite as it was heading into camp. It's become apparent from talking to people in the building and by watching Gabbert throughout camp that he has the ability to be an NFL quarterback -- and soon.

I would like to see something outta him. I think starting him right from the start will only help him in the future. It ain't like the Jags throw the ball alot. Come to think of it do they throw the ball at ALL, lol.

Jags battle Titans for last place in this division...

It's all about "PR" with this one.

After all the hype, it would be great if this class produces one starting QB, anyway. Garrard is adequate, but he's not exactly Mr. Excitement who makes the networks put his team in the prime-time slots.

Don't forget all the NON-hype that came before the draft this year. All we heard was how this year was full of mediocre QB's that would be taken in the first round out of necessity. If Bradford had come out this year and Luck too.....half these guys would have been second and third round picks.

Jack Del Rio has one more year to prove his worth so he's not gonna see the benefits anyway. Enjoy now Jacky boy.

Jags' new marketing campaign...

"We are going to suck - might as well be with this guy."

I still stand by saying that the best QB in this class did go in the third round, Ryan Mallett. Honestly looking at the six guys taken in the first two rounds I bet at least four end up busts.

"Blaine Gabbert" will be as successful as "Byron Leftwich" ... it's all about the name.

Isn't that why they drafted him in the first place, to be an NFL quarterback?

With his skill set, size and confidence Mallett would be starting on about six NFL teams right now with no competition Dolphins, 49rs, Broncos, Raiders, Seahawks, Bills.....

After looking at this picture more closely...shouldn't we be referring to him as "Sunshine" ?

Completely agree, I know it was preseason but he looked very comfortable and confident in the Patriots/Jags game, much more so than Gabbert did. Hard to believe this guy fell to the third round because what he is kinda an **** and had a history of drug use? Well didn't Dan Marino have a history of drug use? (Not saying he is the next Marino, by the way)
Also a scout said Mallett was the first QB to admit to drug use that he knew of... really? I think that shows a sign of maturity, cause I'm sure quite a few other QBs were using in college. Hell I know for a fact Michael Vick was pretty heavy into it at Tech, but I guess he didn't own up to it so it's all good.

...Bengals, Redskins.....and depending on the health of a certain elite quarterback, Indianapolis?

I remember a playoff game against the Steelers when the Jags looked ready to compete. Just what the heck happened, anyway? I still don't get it.

Yup and just wait in about 2 or 3 years some team is gonna be sending New England a 1st rounder for this kid and every team that drafted one of the busts this year (Carolina?, Minnesota?, Cincinnati?) or no one at all (Washington, Miami) are all gonna be regretting it.

Bad drafts... Byron Leftwich, Derrick Harvey, Reggie Nelson, Matt Jones, Reggie Williams, R. Jay Soward.. as well as a lackluster fan base that makes it hard to lure free agents. As well as sticking with below average starters like Garrard for too long.

I don't know ho soon he'll start but I'm more certain that, in two years, he'll be the starting QB for the Los Angeles Jaguars.
