Morneau 'not even close' to former self

08:15 AM ET 08.18 | The Delmon Young trade may not be a white flag in Minnesota. It's just a sign the Twins had given up on Young. But whatever happens over the last month and a half of this season, if you look over the horizon, this team can't regain its longtime place as a giant in the AL Central if Justin Morneau doesn't turn back into his old, pre-concussion self. Right now, Morneau is "not even close to the same guy," one scout said. "It's like he's swinging underwater. He just doesn't look like the same animal. And they really don't have a big [bat] down below that's coming." So these are nerve-racking times for a franchise that desperately needs its stars to play like stars.

It will be a shame if he isn't ever able to be the same player...the guy had some real talent...hopefully next season he's back to his MVP season.

Testify!
He used to kill pitches inside, and hit balls the other way. Now he just flails at pitches away and swings through pitches inside. I really hope he bounces back, but those concussions are tricky blighters.

You know, the more and more we find out about concussions and the long term ramifications, the more and more the dbags who play football and complain that they can't give out headshots sound even more pathetic.
Pittsburgh Steelers, I'm looking right at you.

He's a different hitter by far, but give him time. Hope he comes back.

More so than their injuries they've had four of their most important players perform terribly this season.
Their two best starters from last season, Pavano and Liriano, have each added 1.5 runs to their ERAs this season compared to 2010. As as team they have blown 17 saves, most of that due to Matt Capps' imploding. Valencia hit about .310 last season, this season he's around 70 points lower and his OPS is about 130 points lower.
Also, they are usually at or near the tops in defense which is especially important because most of the Twins philosophy of "pitching to contact". This season they ranks 12th in both errors and fielding %

I can't stand the Steelers, but most defensive players across all teams thing the game is called too tight now especially given the speed of the game you are somehow expected to adjust in mid air from what would have been a shot at the ball itself, player ducks and suddenly its a helmet on helmet hit.
Also, have to look at the RB's especially the physical style runners, doesn't Peyton Hillis for example give a head shot to the defensive player when he's running through the line? They lower their helmet into the defense and from time to time it will be a helmet-to-helmet collision

The Delmon Young trade may not be a white flag in Minnesota.
They're 10.5 games back in their division with three better teams ahead of them and they're 20 games back for the wild card. If they haven't waved the white flag yet, it must be because, like many of their players, their arm is broken.

Right. The 10 games down thing, has been overcome, but not jumping over three teams to do it. They're toast.

a concussion is a brain injury. a bit more serious than a "headache". but your invaluable contribution to the discussion is noted.

Yep I agree. He's just one underperformer of many who have healthy on the Twins.

i still have some hope for valencia...largely b/c he has hit well in the clutch for them. but yeah, we need more out of third base than we've gotten this year. at least punto made the plays.

all what morneau needs to do now its, just relax and take it slowly there is no need for him to rush anything, he should know that the competition its over in the division and in the league, for this twins team the train has gone long time ago!!

Question Morneau's health, then why give up on Young? Unbelievable, one of the worst trades in the teams history, another one, trading for Young; a power pitcher and starting SS that would be an allstar following year. Then give Young away, a power hitter in a slump, who was coming around, when you don't have power hitters, you replace Young with what? He will be a fixture in Detroit.
