Notre Dame in the Big 12?

08:24 AM ET 08.18 | Only a year ago, it seemed as if the Big East was in a most vulnerable position, a notion that may resurface under some possible scenarios. There are informed sources familiar with the Big 12 who are certain that it has its eyes on Notre Dame, which is an independent in football but a member of the Big East in basketball. If A&M departs [for the SEC], as most believe it will, (or if the Big 12 presidents get tired of its duplicitous ways and shows them the door), aggressively pursuing a big name such as Notre Dame would be a stroke of genius. ... If you want to send a strong message that you will no longer be the weakling on the block, going after Notre Dame is the sort of move that will create that impression emphatically.

ND makes too much money with their current setup. The Big 10 have been wanting them for years, and the Irish didn't go there. Why would they go to a conference that's imploding instead?

This just shows that norte dam has no balls to join the BIG TEN,because know that they would get their butts kick all the time.

nice story, wishful thinking ...but not going to happen. If and I mean IF Notre Dame would ever join a conference, It would be the pac 12 or 10 or whatever it is. Why??? they would still be a national team from coast to coast. IF they make the move you will see oklahoma and texas joining the pac 10 and that will force the Big 12 to dissolve, with some of them joining the pac 10, some sec and the rest to acc, big east or wherever... Then you have a super conference that would compete against the sec and Notre dame would still be a National team.. Still not going to happen

They would never join the Big XII. Besides the geography, the academics aren't there. I know people like to talk that football dollars trumps all, but research dollars are in the BILLIONS for many universities, like most of the B1G. If Notre Dame ever joins a conference, it will be the B1G because of the academic opportunities.

Nope.

Not happening.

I wouldn't discount this too much. It may not directly be the Big 12 but there is something in the works for future realignment and UT & Notre Dame are being proactive. Notre Dame knows they will have to join a conference if colleges start going 16 team conferences.

Geographically the Big 10 would be a better option then the Big 12 for travel and fan base, every year this comes up about ND joining a conf. for now I beleave there content to stay and independent as it gives them more control over scheduling and what they do

A huge part ofwhy Notre Dane doesn't join the Big Ten is because of their history with that conference. 100 or so years ago Notre Dame really wanted to be in the Big Ten. That was before the early days of their greatness. Notre Dame tried every thing they could think of to get into the conference that dominates the region they play in. But the Big Ten laughed at them. They blacklisted them and wouldn't let members play against the Irish.

This led to Notre Dame being forced to travel far and wide to get competition for their football team. They were unhappy about this at the time but it had the unforseen benefit of getting ND a lot of publicity and fans. After years of crisscrossing the country to play the non-Big Ten elite teams, Notre Dame became the most popular team in the country. It's not regulary discussed but the powers that be at Notre Dame hold a deep grudge against the Big Ten and would join almost any other conference before joining that one.

Never happen. Not only do they have no interest in joining a conference for football, but leaving Big East basketball for the Big 12? Thats a joke

Really? Would ND give up home-and-homes with Iowa State, Baylor, Stillwater, Okla,, Kansas State, Kansas over playing USC, Baltimore, Philly, New York City, Seattle, Northern California, Barnstorming?
