JR becoming the next Don Cherry

08:27 AM ET 08.19 | This just in: Jeremy Roenick likes attention. [As opposed to Brendan Shanahan, Steve Yzerman and Joe Nieuwendyk], JR's far more comfortable being this generation's loudmouth TV personality. ... "When you have an opinion and you're able to get it out like I do on a nightly basis, more people are going to tune in and you're going to get attention. I like that aspect of it." Already tabbed as potentially becoming the American answer to Don Cherry, Roenick's profile should soar to new heights given NBC's 10-year deal with the league includes new pre- and postgame shows, 100 regular-season games and far more playoff coverage. He simply grins when he hears the Cherry comparison being made.

Some of us consider any comparison to Cherry unflattering.

Don Cherry is that carton of milk in your fridge that is so old that (1) the expiration date wore off and (2) has a paper price tag on it instead of a UPC symbol

LOL! The fashion statement also indicates an affiliation to a bygone era.

I'll tell you this though......I'll take JR as the new Don Cherry over Mad Mike Milbury.

Milbury they'll keep, unfortunately. McGuire they should bury behind an arena somewhere.

Will he start wearing jackets made from old slipcovers?

For me it's the equivilent of a die hard Detriot Lions fans listening to Matt Millen give his insight....ugh it's so infuriating!!

I'd rather see Gary Thorne or Barry Melrose.

I sure hope he doesn't turn into a Don Cherry. I do like JR and his blunt comments and the fact that he knows what he's talking about. I also like the way he's not afraid to take on his fellow commentators when they make stupid statements.

I agree. I like that about JR as well. He doesn't do it just to argue, he usually makes valid points in his arguements.

August 19, 2011  08:55 AM ET

Outside of crying when the Hawks won, I like JR. Need people to speak their mind....and people who were actually good at the game.

August 19, 2011  09:00 AM ET

Seriously, is it that hard to find a pic of Jeremy Roenick?

Plus, there is NO WAY he can pull of the suits like Cherry.

Thorne: Yes
Melrose: No

I like the fact that he's the only person on TV who [b]will[/i] throw down with that idiot Milbury - Matter of fact, there came a point during the playoffs where they purposefully stopped scheduling them together, sending Milbury to NBC and Roenick to Versus.

Milbury tried one of his bullying tactics (getting loud and pushy, like he does with all the other analysts) and JR looked at him sideways like "Don't you even. I'll kick your ass every which way to next Tuesday."

...As for Don Cherry....Even though he's hetero, he seems to dress like Hockey's version of Liberace. I'm waiting on the rhinestones. Fer shurr.

ooops...mixed tags, so early. The java ain't kicked-in yet.

Great stuff

and was noted, he speaks his mind AND was a good player.
And for all the subs mentioned...anyone but Clement and McGuire

He already is.

Comparison to Don Cherry is an insult to JR! Have some class.

Nah. Roenik is his own man. He won't copy Cherry's fashion "sense". I suspect he will want to make his own unique style statement and I'm betting it will have something to do with his hair.
