Blue coach rips Panthers forward

St. Louis Blues coach Andy Murray had harsh criticism for Panthers forward Nathan Horton on Thursday for declining an invitation to represent Canada in the World Hockey Championships last spring. Murray was head coach for Canada, which won the gold medal. Horton, 22, was advised by his Boston-based agent, Paul Krepelka, to skip the event while Krepelka and the Panthers negotiated what turned out to be the six-year, $24 million deal Horton signed last June. "Terrible excuse. Terrible," Murray said. "You're a young player like that and your country asks you? There should be no question." "You never know," Horton said. "If I would have gone over there and gotten hurt, then what happens?"

A player looking out for his best interest, like the coach, GM, and team don't do the same thing. It is annoying when other teams coaches chastise other teams players.

No brainer. I have to agree with Horton. As much of a privlidge it would be to play for your country you have to look out for yourself/family first. Besides, he plays for the Panthers, there will be lots of chances at the WHC while the NHL playoffs are going on.

seriously, Horton is 100% right here. Now that he has his money, he'd probably gladly accept an invitation to play for his country.

This coach should shut up there team is garbage and we just beat them 1-0 last night.

Horton made the right decision...Its a shame he plays for such a horriable team...Legacyy84 you are a moron...The Blues are 6th in the west while the Panthers are only 12th in the east....You just proved to the whole world why Florida shouldn't have a pro hockey team...****.

murray haas absolutely no right to lambast horton on his decision.sorry to say,but he has to look out for number 1.if he gets hurt, then what?

I agree with Smacky

Now that he has his contract all sewn up, he will have more freedom to play in international tournaments. Seeing as how the Panthers probably won't make the playoffs for quite some time, Canadians can sleep well knowing Horton will suit up for many WHC to come.

Personal stature in front of country? Lets see if they ask him to play at all. Murray is a good coach, this kind of stuff however would best be served during the WCH... not in the middle of a season. Lets worry about turing around the team coach.

Horton was wrong - if guys with names like Gretzky, Messier, Lemieux, Yzerman and Sakic can go their WHOLE CAREERS without saying no to Canada, then who is Horton to say no? The biggest honour in the hockey world is getting invited to play for Team Canada, and he puts himself above them? I can understand - a little - but he was wrong, pure and simple. How many millions of kids in Canada dream of donning the Red and White? Even garbage like LINDROS knew better than to turn down that invitation!

i knew i could count on you gocanada...smart brains in your head for sure.

Way to go, Horton! What a stellar example of patriotism! (DC)
