09:00 AM ET 08.20 | It was criticism from one of the best in women's golf, and Michelle Wie was hurt. Annika Sorenstam, who has retired from the LPGA, suggested last month during the U.S. Women's Open that Wie was shortchanging women's golf by pursuing her degree at Stanford. Wie, 21, who hopes to have her Stanford degree in communications by March, had not responded publicly to that criticism until she was reached this week by The Times. And, while she was polite, Wie was also emphatic in defending how she has handled her golf career and educational ambitions.

Are there no golf stories to report? This is really sad SI, I thought you guys had minimum standards for story quality. Might as well let the spammers have this one.

Actually, I don't see any actual CRITICISM of Wie personally, other than that Sorenstam was stating that it was good for the women's tour if Wie were to focus on golf. I don't see anywhere that Sorenstam was saying Wie was a bad person for chasing her degree. I just think Sorenstam was looking out for the good of the tour.

You are correct, but the golf press is brutal and always trying to make something out of nothing. I doubt one could use more than one hand worth of fingers in counting the good golf journalists!

Spot on. Get the education. And Annika, just shut up. Maybe you shortchanged women's golf by retiring.

If Wie was posing in Playboy or something of that nature, I could understand Sorenstam's comment. But she's finishing her degree at Stanford. I think she made the best decision for her and no one else. She's young and has a bright future ahead of her, no matter what field she chooses to be in.

I'm not much of a Wie fan but I think it is great that she is focusing on getting her degree. I am disappointed in Annika that she would lay critisim on Wie for that.

Are you kidding me? I say go to school, have fun, drink it up. Life is too short. Besides, with the state of women's golf as is, she may need that Stanford education to fall back on!
