Petrino allies: Falcons owner meddled

Arthur Blank was too meddlesome with the Falcons and former coach Bobby Petrino's family was "miserable in Atlanta." Those are the latest -- and maybe the final -- salvos in the continuing fallout from Petrino's sudden departure from Falcons coach to head coach at Arkansas. Arkansas' athletics director and Petrino's agent have publicly defended the coach and attacked Falcons owner Blank in two newspaper articles published Friday. But by midday, both sides were calling a truce and not willing to talk further.

Too effing bad.

Petrino lied to his bosses and quit on his team in the most gutless of fashions.

At least Saban (who is equally as dishonest and gutless) finished the season.

What a crock.....he could not hack it in the NFL as most college coaches can't so he went back to the minors where football is much, much easier.

He is Arkansas problem now.

Hey Pig Fan: he will eventually lie to you and s crew you over too.

Of course as a Tampa Bay fan I will miss Petrino, 2 easy wins down the drain.

Arkansas is getting a coach that quit on his team, didn't have the courage
to wait till the end of the season, and let his players not to mention his boss, know of his intentions.
I hope Arkansas has a plan B becouse when the going gets tough there
coach will be on the first Razorback out of town,SORRY ARKANSAS but
you still need a leader for your football program.

he makes me sick. Too meddlesome, yeah my boss is too meddlesome as well. Nut up you big pansy. My family and I lived in worse places than Atlanta and we didn't fall apart. What a bunch of whiney spineless saps. How hard can it be when you're pulling down millions a year and living the high life. I wouldn't p-eeee on this guy if he was on fire.
ugh

December 15, 2007  11:13 AM ET

Too bad for Petrino's family. Petrino didn't have a gun to his head when he took what he called "The best job in the NFL." By the way, what was he on when he said that?

After everything he pulled all season long, it's not too hard to fathom why he's second to William Sherman in the most-hated department down there in Home Depot/Chicken-and-Waffles land.

He's given Michael Vick a bit of a reprieve for the time being.

December 15, 2007  11:21 AM ET

When are those BONEHEADS in the Petrino camp gonna get the message? Its not that he left so much as to the manner in which he departed....CLASSLESS - behind the back - in the middle of the night cleaning out - BULLSH _ _! Its beyond disloyal you bunch of blowholes! Honesty would have been a pleasant quality...something Petrino doesn't have. He's gone and thats good. Now Arkansas can deal with the character. Perhaps they'll get better results and we all hope they do.

December 15, 2007  11:24 AM ET

Rich McKay left the Tampa Bay Bucs when he got a better opportunity in Atlanta. Arthur Blank told Dan Reeves he wouldn't be retained after he bought the team even though Reeves had brought the team to a Super Bowl. These guys did exactly what Petrino did: saw an opportunity and took it. The job Petrino took in Atlanta was not the one he ended up with (see Michael Vick). The only people Petrino owes his allegiance to is his family and he made their lives better and took a PAY CUT to go to Arkansas. Clearly he's dirty, but let's not get carried away, their all dirty. Players leave all the time for more money. Let's all get off of our high horses and get on with it already.

December 15, 2007  11:40 AM ET

Petrino needs to never speak again. Just stay in your little bubble in Arkansas because everyone else in the world considers you a complete and total d.ouchebag.

December 15, 2007  11:48 AM ET

I can understand why Petrinos family was miserable what with the millions of dollars he was making. Those poor, poor people.

December 15, 2007  12:18 PM ET

Good. May this s hite be over!

December 15, 2007  12:20 PM ET

Falcon's fans were miserable too. so, good riddance

December 15, 2007  12:27 PM ET

"We didn't quit you quit"! ( Tom Cruise) ALL THE RIGHT MOVES. Petrino really did quit in all aspects of the word.

At least Spurrier ,Davis and Sabon finished out the season..

Call Jim Mora Jr...at least the players respected and liked him.

Reality43,

There is a huge difference between a player leaving the team he played for as a free agent and what Pussino did. Free agents leave after the season. Not in the middle of a season It is very well known to management when a players contract runs out, or in the case of a player option, when that player has the option to opt out of the contract. Those contracts don't expire with 3 games left in the season. Those players don't offer 10 word BS comments to the coaches he worked with and many of whom moved to take jobs working with him.

At least most coaches have the common sense to a) wait until the end of the season to quit and b) have the guts to face the players on the team, and the management and coaches of the team.

Pussino is nothing but a whiney little baby who can't committ to anything. He has signed 20 years or so of contracts in the last 18 months.

The more I see these contracts being bailed out of this easily the more I think schools and teams need to put huge opt out clauses in a contracts to make it very expensive for a coach to leave his job.

In fairness I think coaches should have equally large buyout clauses if a school wants to terminate a coach prior to the exipration of the contract.

Wow!!! +40yearcowboyfan is excatly right!!!

December 15, 2007  01:08 PM ET

Yes he is.

December 15, 2007  01:53 PM ET

Cowboyfan is dead on. Of course the owner 'meddled'. He is the owner. Petrino is a disgrace.

December 15, 2007  01:58 PM ET

It sounds like a bunch of excuses and trying too help Petino's new reputation because he is going to have a hell of a time recruiting. Parents will not want their kids going to a school where the coach is not trustworhty and a out right liar and quiter. Parent want their kids to be taught to have integity and good character. Now the entire nation knows that Petrino is the totally opposite of those characteristics. Even the Arkansas AD said that they didn't talk to Petrino until after he resigned which is another BIG FAT LIE!!! Pertino's agent said there has been talk for about three weeks about Petrino's desire to return to college with Arkansas. Also, on the day Petrino resigned, they met at 2pm in Atlanta and worked out the contract preramifications and then Petrino resigned at about 5:30pm. Sounds like they are trying to save thier reputations. Remember, they have to convince kids and their parents that Arkansas is where they want to be. That, my friends, will be a very tall order for the talent that can go any where they want to. He will have to settle for lesser talent which will make it impossible to win in the SEC. This is the big boy league of college football and talent is a must!

December 15, 2007  02:24 PM ET

WHAAAAA! The guy who put up all the money for the team and OWNS it got involved in its management! WHAAAAA!

So I'm gonna have to jump ship in the middle of the voyage! And I'll get them. I won't tell them till it's already done!

Puh-leez!

/sarcasm off for the irony-impaired.

December 15, 2007  03:38 PM ET

Man. and I thought nick sabon was a coward. At least sabon finished the season

December 15, 2007  04:52 PM ET

I'm not a Falcon fan, but if Petrino had a problem with the front office, the thing to do would have been to "man up" and tell them. To sneak out like a thief was pure cowardice. On the other hand, there had to be pretty serious issues for him accept a job at $2M less than he was earning in Atlanta.
