08:24 AM ET 08.22 | As of this offseason, the question may not be Who's the next No. 1?, but Who's on the clock?. You don't have to watch him for very long to see why Nail Yakupov is considered the favorite to be taken with the first overall selection in the 2012 NHL Entry draft. The Russian speedster was one of 36 top 2012 prospects on the ice for the NHL Research, Development and Orientation Camp on Wednesday and Thursday in Etobicoke, Ont. The prospects tested out a variety of possible rule changes in front of a who's who of NHL executives, scouts and coaches while showcasing their talents against top talent. "You could tell he's a dynamic player," said Phoenix Coyotes coach Dave Tippett.

Phoenix probably won't get a crack at the #1 pick in 2012 (sorry Dave). The question now becomes, who does? Ottawa? The Islanders? Edmonton? To***to? Also the phrase Russian speedster will make some GMs nervous.

I don't think he will scare off as many GMs, as he is playing in the OHL and not over in Russia, so it wont be hard to bring him over.

all I can say is that I hope my favorite team stays far far away from anymore Russian prospects

What? Nikita Filatov and Zherdev are enough for you?

...At 5'11" and a whopping 167lbs, excuse me if I say "Nail is going to get hammered."

August 22, 2011  10:20 AM ET

I wouldn't ever trust drafting a Russian.

That isn't really small for the NHL this days. I'm sure he will put on a few pounds, the kid is only 17 or 18.

I don't think he is any smaller than Crosby.

That's why they are all conscripts.

Number one prospect just for his name.

August 22, 2011  10:49 AM ET

With so many Russian over-rated, head-cases in the league (and yes, I include Ovechkin), I'd think long and hard about drafting one 1st overall

August 22, 2011  10:53 AM ET

I would rather draft a North American prospect any day of the week. The Euro's don't to come complete with hearts. It's like getting this awesome toy and you can't play with it because the batteries are not included.

...Unless you have the "Detroit connection", that is.

What's really curious is that Yzerman drafted three Russians (this year) with his first three picks: Namestnikov, Kucherov and Nesterov.

I presume he and his scouting staff know what they're doing. Though I, as well, am very leery of drafting Europeans in general (and especially Russians.)

Crosby is officially listed as being 5' 11" and 200 pounds. For what that's worth.

And they don't like to practice. "I mean its only practice, right?"

Now we are seeing the true genius of Paul Holmgren's plan. Blow the Flyers up and have a horrible year putting them in line for the #1 draft pick. Get this kid to revitalize the offense for a return to glory. It all makes sense now!

Datsyuk is the only Russian I would care to have on my team.

God bless your faith Brother ;-)

The NHL's top draft prospect? Usually whoever the Wings draft like 5th or 6th round.

It worked for the Penguins, but they needed about 5 years in the cellar before they could amount to anything. If Holmgren hirers Edzo to coach for them you know he is planning longer high draft picks.

Yet in the KHL they have to practice more. Once there season is over, they continue to practice until the playoffs are over. So if you don't make the playoffs at all, you still have to show up and practice for another couple weeks until the playoffs are over, because you continue to get pay cheques during the playoffs (unlike the NHL).
