Johnson may have locked up Nats return

08:17 AM ET 08.25 | In the course of this week, Davey Johnson chose not to pull Ross Detwiler or Jordan Zimmermann in spots that may have, in the past, seen them hooked. Both decisions illustrate why Johnson will be the manager for the Nats next season. That's not a fact. It's an educated guess, a compelling probability. The Nationals will go through a process after the season to analyze their options. Things can change. A better candidate might be found. But the dots have become so huge it's impossible not to connect them. Baring an earthquake, Johnson is returning. And it's a saga that's gaining a "meant-to-be" quality. General Manager Mike Rizzo loves the job Johnson's doing.

No comment........since I said that, isn't that really a comment?

I hope Johnson doesn't start "baring" anything in the dugout, the guy always seemed a little creepy. I love the way he manages, but I could see him driving around schools in a white van full of stuffed animals and candy.

These "who will be the manager" threads are always a bit meaningless. Managers don't win games although they can lose games. It really doesn't matter who the manager is as long as players with talent are on the roster. Bottom line.........if a guy's not a complete jerk, can avoid doing too much and keeps his mouth mostly shut.........he can usually be as good a manager as anybody else.

I like Johnson and hope he sticks around for another year, thought I'm not sure the Zimmermann decision is one to brag about. Johnson left him in through the 7th inning and Zimm walked the first batter he faced and gave up a two-run homer to Sean Burroughs. Nats lost 2-0. Jordan Z has a great future and has gotten terrible run support but I'm not sure that's a managerial decision that argues in Johnson's favor.

glad to see Davey back in the game....on the other side of former Orioles....RIP Mike Flanaghan

It's a slow Thursday, interns got to meet their quota or something.

Next.

Can someone explain to me how a sub-500 team that's 21 games out manages to have about 3 threads a week?

Given that you had to click on the word Comment in order to state that you had no comment, I would surmise that you did indeed make a comment. Would you care to comment?

Media Outlets are the answer. Washington Post is the source for this thread. Not only does the Post have wide circulation but they have almuni (eg Kornheiser/Wilbon) scattered across the sports spectrum.

I agree with you on Johnson's call from the other night. He's managing more towards an eye toward development for the out years than in winning any given game this year. As Tom Boswell said in the full column: Johnson wanted to build confidence and grit by leaving Zimmerman in. That said, I think he's a transitional manager and that there will be a new mgr in the dugout if not in 2012 then definitely for the start of 2013.

Rather have a few more on the Tribe? Also a sub-500 team? And the Nats also draw more fans than they do although they were never in the pennant race (the Nats) at all.

How about Heath Bell being put on waivers? SF claimed him, yet no threads about the most anticipated free-agent-to-be.

Jesus on a crutch! I've seen better stories in the obituaries.
