Concussions lead Mueller to tinted visor

08:32 AM ET 08.25 | Peter Mueller, who thought his concussion problems were over last September, missed the entire regular season after suffering another one in his preseason return. Mueller is saying all the right things again, but with a noticeable uptick in his voice. "I'm excited to be a hockey player again," Mueller said Wednesday. ... He'll also wear a new tinted visor designed to lower the potentially harmful effects bright lighting can have on concussion victims. "Sometimes I feel like I'm in 'Top Gun' out there with the tinted visor, but it's been great and a very comfortable helmet to wear," said Mueller, 23, the eighth overall selection in the 2006 NHL draft by Phoenix.

Amendment to the "Bear Hug" rule:
Notwithstanding paragraph 1 (the "bear hug" rule), if a player is wearing a non-clear ("tinted") visor, he cannot be contacted in a physcial manner by another player. The League shall have sole and ultimate discretion in determining which players have sufficient injury status to be awarded a tinted visor.

It'll be great to have him back in the lineup. He's got a lot of dust to kick off his jersey, but once he gets back in the groove, he'll add a lot to our depth, and if he can stay healthy he'll be around for awhile.

Are tinted visors allowed? I remember a few years ago Ovechkin used to wear a tinted visor and he was forced to remove it. Does anyone else rememebr that or have I been smoking crack again?

True. They weren't - But, I guess Ovie used one to look "cool" and now Mueller is allowed to use one because he has concussion issues...At least he gets to use one in practice. Dunno about the regular season.
I can see Ovie thinking: "Da! I have concussion as well. I need mirrored visor. You let me wear, yes?"

You can use a tinted visor, but not a fully darkened one. Ovie used a darkened one, once ruled illegal he switched to a tinted. The difference is significant.

if the tinted visor is going to help him avoid post-concussion headaches cause of the LIGHTING, there i hate to say that NO helmet out there will help him when he gets rocked into the boards!
Sad to say it (cause concussions are a HUGE issue in the league right now) but he's not going to last long

Ovie first wore the "oil" visor which became a big issue because the goalies claimed it gave him an unfair advantage because you couldnt see his eyes, so essentially the ruling came out that any visor can be worn as long as the players eyes can be seen...
