Yankees not giving in to Twins

Even though the Yankees and Twins have talked about Johan Santana since Hank Steinbrenner's self-imposed Dec. 3 deadline, one thing hasn't changed: The Yankees will not give up two young pitchers to get the best pitcher in baseball.

Smart decision. Kennedy, Chamberlain, and Hughes will all be really good.

December 16, 2007  09:20 AM ET

It would seem the twins overplayed their hand . Now they can see what the red sox will give for him and decide. there does not seem to be a third option here..unless you consider keeping him and doing the august trade an option..

Considering that Hughes and Kennedy each have the potential to win 15 games a year and that Santana probably wont win 30 a year, I think it is a no brainer to not do this deal if it includes two pitchers. Let someone else get raped.

This is a broken record.

santana is the best pitcher in baseball??? where on earth does these things come from, a crystal ball?

December 16, 2007  10:11 AM ET

Santana is the BEST pitcher in baseball

December 16, 2007  10:18 AM ET

93-44 with a 3.22 ERA

70-32 with a 2.89 ERA the last 4 years=best pitcher in baseball

While playing for a small market team that is always offensively challenged

Take away the 15-13 record last year when he lost a bunch of 3-2 game's???

55-19 in 3 years

December 16, 2007  12:38 PM ET

The Twins ARE overplaying their had, 50year, and they'll end up with nada if they aren't careful.

December 16, 2007  12:56 PM ET

I still think the Twins are wise to wait. Come July when it sinks in that either the Red Sox, the Yankees, the Indians, or the Tigers will miss the playoffs the attitudes on overpaying will change. Who knows, maybe Seattle will make it even more interesting.

The gamble is whether all four of these teams will be as good as they are expected to be.

If Santana makes it to free agency, expect the Yanks to land him. Think about it: Pettite ($16M), Mussina ($15M), Giambi ($20M), Abreu ($16M), Pavano ($11M), Farnsworth ($6M) will all be free agents after this year. For those of you who are mathematically challenged that is $84M of freed up money if none are resigned. Abreu will probably be resigned and maybe Pettite. So at worst it will be 52 million, which is equal to paying 2 years of Santana.

I'd like to see the Twins sign him to an extension now. That does two things- it takes away the uncertainty of how much he will cost, and it takes away the possibility of just waiting for him to become a free agent so you don't give up anything. He already has a no-trade clause, so if you resign him you don't give up anything. You could then wait until the right offer comes along, probably in July. The Yanks/Sox don't want to give up multiple prime prospects, but that is what Johan is worth.

Johan is the the best pitcher in baseball. The odds of the the Holy Trio all being healthy, exceptional players over the next 10 years is not a sure thing. Santana is....One of the Holy Trio and whoever else they want... Get it done Cash!!

December 16, 2007  06:08 PM ET

I heard the Yankees were throwing in a lifetime supply of chocolate covered anaebolic steroids....

Just Kidding!!!!!

December 16, 2007  09:53 PM ET

ok first dont call it the Holy Trio.
call it the Big Three.. that's their nickname.
and johan isnt worth his.. his home stats have such a better ERA than his away stats.. look it up. its the twins home stadium.. its stacked for pitchers...
chamberlain and hughes have proven themselves ready (chamberlain eyepopping stats... hughes- was in middle of no hitter before injury, and won the ONLY GAME IN THE POSTSEASON FOR THE YANKS!)... kennedy has potential..
ok hughes won the ONLY GAME IN THE POSTSEASON... and yankee fans always say the season begins in october.. well keep a younger guy who already proved himself in october in his ROOKIE SEASON...
unlike santana who lost to barry zito when they got swept 2 years ago...
keep hughes, kennedy, and chamberlain their like the Big Three the A's had in their glory days (mark mulder, barry zito, tim hudson)... except way better

yea captain i see ur point on the titles...
but chamberlain proved himself (as a reliever) and hughes proved himself in the postseason clutch... i say chances are 1/3 are lights out... and the other 2 are the like a 3-4 punch in the rotation
