Pettitte turns up heat on Clemens

This couldn't have been easy for Andy Pettitte, knowing that any type of admission regarding his use of human growth hormone would be damning to his mentor and buddy, Roger Clemens. He did it anyway, and good for him, but it only begs the question: Why haven't we heard from the Rocket? Pettitte turned the heat up on Clemens in a huge way, making it hard for anyone to believe Brian McNamee is making up these stories about steroids.

Legalize steroids so we can have a lot more "good athletes".

December 16, 2007  09:55 AM ET

Clemens is a ****, we've always known that. Pettitte is standing up. Two different guys.

December 16, 2007  10:04 AM ET

I always had great respect for both of them.
Not so sure how I feel about the now.
When Roger played in Boston, he was a demi god.
I've always liked Pettite.. He's the Varitek (and not just positional)
of the Yankees.

December 16, 2007  10:07 AM ET

Just another stinking juicing cheater.

Nice guy? Sure.

Stand-up guy? Absolutely NOT. Stand up guys stand up, admit their human frailties and mistakes BEFORE they get fingered.

Andy had FIVE years to come clean, and all the while, he sat there with his secret, while others were enduring the stigma of being drug cheats, he could have come out and said he did it, was sorry, and moved on.

He did nothing until the report fingered him.

December 16, 2007  10:14 AM ET

Pettitte didn't really say what he did was wrong, he just said "if what I did was wrong I am sorry," and while we all know that it was illegal and therefore wrong, at least he said something. The Rocket is just hiding out and hoping he still gets into the hall...

After hearing Andy Pettitte speak on this, I don't judge. It wasn't banned and his story really tracks with the Mitchell Report. He even said he didn't comfortable with it so he stopped. I believe him.

<<< It wasn't banned >>>

Banned or not, it was still in violation of Federal Law, and MLB drug rules dating back from 1971 (which I didn't know until reading the report itself). And Pettite could've come out and said that he made a mistake back then, and gave it up.

if you are innocent of taking performance enhancing drugs, and the guy investigating steroids in baseball sends your agent a letter asking to speak with you, and you decline to even talk to the man, you aren't a stand up guy.

Clemens didn't find out what the charges were against him because he knew what they were. His denials after the report was released ring utterly hollow now more so than ever.

December 16, 2007  10:40 AM ET

OK, so let's continue the investigation and speak with EVERY trainer who worked in MLB from, say, 1990-2005.

And let's see how many guys are left "standing" after that. It's just too easy to point at the guys that got caught, and then hide behind momma's skirts, crying for the game to end.

December 16, 2007  10:41 AM ET

Why haven't we heard from the Rocket?

Because he is guilty? Too bad, many of these players could have just come clean and apolagized before the report came out. Now, apologies and admissions will sound pretty thin. Or...they could just not have cheated in the first place.

December 16, 2007  10:45 AM ET

<<< Or...they could just not have cheated in the first place. >>>

But Wanted Man, everyone else was doing it! *rolls eyes*

I wonder how many of these guys now wish they'd not listened to Don Fehr, and Gene Orza, and sat down with Senator Mitchell?

What would the reaction be if a player, any player that was to be named in the report stood up, and gave a detailed accounting of his use, and the culture of use in MLB, to Senator Mitchell before the report came out?

There would be some backlash of course, but ultimately, people could, and would forgive a stand up act. Anything any of these juicers do now is just lame.

December 16, 2007  10:56 AM ET

Andy Pettitte Houston Astro- "I've never used any drugs to enhance my performance in baseball. I don't know what to say except that it's embarrassing that my name would be out there."

Andy Pettitte Outed Juicer- "If what I did was an error in judgment on my part, I apologize," Pettitte said Saturday in a statement released by his agent. "I accept responsibility for those two days."

Stand up guy indeed.

December 16, 2007  11:01 AM ET

Why haven't we heard from the Rocket? Well whats he gonna say? Deny it and be caught lying? The other answer is much more simple....his attorney told him to keep his mouth shut! Its an attorney thing.

December 16, 2007  11:07 AM ET

It's not an attorney thing. The Rocket is watching his legacy go up in smoke. He really can't do anything at this point to save it. He was an "all in" juicer for a long period of time.

He can't apologize for "two days". He's hosed. Disgraced. Bonds is too, he just doesn't know it.

December 16, 2007  11:10 AM ET

Premise of column correct: Wagons circling, Roger Clemens. Asterisks in your future.

December 16, 2007  11:19 AM ET

everyone else was doing it! *rolls eyes*

I'm not sure where you're coming with that, and I don't want to debate the percentages (who the **** really knows?) Boy, this is getting as fun as the Hollywood Communist Witch Hunts of the '50's. McCarthyism anyone?

December 16, 2007  11:25 AM ET

It's EXACTLY like that, WM...I said the same to a friend yesterday.

Fingers pointed, accusations denied, he-said, she-said claims. No trials, just verdicts.

So I say if that's how it's going to work, put EVERYONE through the same ringer. Interview EVERY trainer and see what you come up.

Of course, they're not all facing federal indictments, so they don't have to sing. But maybe the threat of a subpoena could clear up some memories, huh?

December 16, 2007  11:28 AM ET

It was a sarcastic crack to the apologists out there. Not meant for you Wanted Man. :)

December 16, 2007  11:28 AM ET

And for all you haters gloating that a few Yankees got named, are you so consumed with rage that you'd toss the whole game on the fire to burn a few rivals?

That's pathetic. If you care a lick about baseball, call this out for the sham that it is. If it's the truth you're after, subpoena everybody. If it's just hating points you're after, you're as much a fraud as the players you're so busy hating.
