08:02 AM ET 08.29 | On the surface, Ryan Grant took a pay $1 million cut, and the fact he's not complaining suggests there's more to the contract than the bottom line. In fact, Grant has accepted the reduction almost as an occupational hazard for a running back in the National Football League. "When you don't take that personal it makes football easy," Grant said Sunday. "I wasn't the first and I won't be the last. That's how it goes." ... In the deal, Grant's base salary of $3.5 million was reduced to $2.5 million. In return, his $2.5 million base salary was fully guaranteed against both skill and injury, something his previous base had not been. "I also understand both sides," said Grant. "That's why I'm in favor of other people doing it. I think you'll see it with a lot of running backs."

Grant is a sell-out

August 29, 2011  08:09 AM ET

it seems smart to get "guaranteed" money protected against injury...

August 29, 2011  08:12 AM ET

In this guys case it may be, but by week 4 he'll be on the bench nursing an injury like he always does.

Oh, I haven't forgotten.

GreenBay doesn't need him, wow these articles suck today.

Money, money, money. It's all about money. I'm sick of hearing about money. Play some football already and keep your mouth shut about your personal business.

HEELLLLLOOO!!! This is fumble-boys career we're talking about......Is it really a career if you were injured for over half of it?!?

August 29, 2011  08:29 AM ET

I am reminded of how prostitutes are just as concerned about money up front.

I don't know... Bob Sanders is a hell of a player but dude's been injured for half his career too. Almost exactly half.

Listen up, Chris Johnson. Running backs aren't the premier players of the NFL. They've got a short half-life, and most get cut before ever cashing in on the out-years of those big contracts.

"Take what they may give you, and give them what you can."

That is my point, if you can't get on the field u ain't all that. That's why Bob S. ain't in Indy anymore. Grant seems to think he's worth 2.5 mil and I'd say he won't be healthy for over 10 games.

This is simple cost vs. benefit. In a league where all contracts are not guaranteed, and injuries are quite prevalent, getting your money guaranteed makes a lot of sense. However, ~30% pay cut is pretty steep for that kind of security, IMHO.

Noone else has ran for 4,600 yards in the last 3 years though.. and the Titans are going to suck whether he's on the field or not... if he's not on the field then THEY might be the winners of your suck for luck sweepstakes.

Green Bay looks to repeat. Still favorites as far as I can tell.

agreed...but their O-line is a little suspect....

August 29, 2011  08:42 AM ET

Grant has played in 48 regular season games. He fumbled 4 times total. 790 attempts... 4 fumbles. 0.5% fumble rate. Do you people even watch football?

everyone has a little 'suspect' to their team.....it's all good.

especially in a year with reduced training camp time...the blitz is en vogue, even in preseason....
