08:02 AM ET 08.31 | Is Chris Johnson, amid all the speculation and some rhetoric, nearing a contract signing in Tennessee? The Titans and [Johnson] continue to negotiate a long-term deal, according to league sources. The sides remain in close contact and are working toward a deal that would end the three-time Pro Bowl running back's holdout in time for him to participate in the regular-season opener on Sept. 11. The sides were at a stalemate after a face-to-face meeting last week, but conversations continue to the point where momentum toward a new deal could build considerably by the weekend, if not sooner. ... Ultimately, Johnson's deal might end up including $30 million in guaranteed money (running back DeAngelo Williams got $21 million guaranteed from Carolina this offseason) with an average per year value around $10 million.

I knew this dude wasn't gonna sit for long!!

Those numbers are reasonable. Do the deal, already.

I've tried for years to get my Johnson to sign anything, no luck!

maybe if your johnson had some ink in it you'd have better luck.

And fantasy football fans rejoice. Until he pulls his hamstring in the opener and is out for the next four weeks.

Sign already! At least we Titans fans saw a good backup get some work (Jamie Harper).

CJ... take the money and run

August 31, 2011  08:19 AM ET

I think the "Johnson" is not gonna be as productive for the first 5 weeks of the season and by then lines will be stacking up against the run.....long season ahead.

Ouch. You mean he got no lead in his pencil?

August 31, 2011  08:27 AM ET

He needs to take the deal. At the rate of decline for running backs, this may be the last sweet contract he ever signs.

AFC south...last respite for good RBs ? (johnson, foster, MJD,)

August 31, 2011  08:32 AM ET

With him - Titans have a remote chance at .500...

Without him - they have an excellent chance at Andrew Luck.

It's not going to work if the ink well you're dipping it in is all dried up.

If the Titans were smart, they probably showed him the deals of all the great backs in the history of the NFL and how their salaries were never the same as the Top QB's...

Once Chris realizes he is not getting Brady, Manning or Vick money, then he will wake up, and get paid what the Top RB in the league should be paid.

Then, he will immediately cash the check and add a few more gold teeth to his mouth.
