Heisman candidate ... Matt Barkley?

08:17 AM ET 08.31 | The USC Trojans will be expected to open 1-0 in Week 1, which finds them hosting Minnesota at the Coliseum. [I] expect smoother sailing than last year's 32-21 victory at Minnesota. I also expect a huge season from junior QB Matt Barkley (Mater Dei) that thrusts him into the Heisman Trophy chase. Wouldn't even be surprised if Barkley finishes with better numbers than consensus Heisman favorite Andrew Luck of Stanford. Clip and save. ... The college football cognoscenti have anointed Luck, Oklahoma QB Landry Jones, Oregon RB LaMichael James and Boise State QB Kellen Moore as the preseason Heisman favorites, but how many of them had Auburn's Cam Newton at the top of their lists a year ago?

Hey SVT I opened up a Browser this morning and look what I read:

College football notebook: NCAA hands down Miami suspensions

Gosh they must be a bunch of Idiots.

No one outside of Ohio cares. Besides your comment on a USC story is plain dumb.

We had a similar thread two days ago on U$C running backs and we had a grand total of 14 posts. Wow those U$C fans came out in droves.

I don't know...I haven't seen anything in the past that would suggest he would be Heisman qualified...

So, the Heisman race is only on the left coast between Luck and Barkley. Guess everyone else will just have to settle for team wins.

Probably. Strange how you have to be on a winning "team" to receive an "individual" award. Just sayin'.

Landry if OU ends up #1.

DG, I heard two talking heads on Rivals Radio covering the Heisman question for 2011 2 weeks ago and they were taking calls. They (2 heads) kept handicapping the candidates based upon the likeliehood of their team winning the NC or being in the hunt. I wanted to puke. Where in the Heisman "questiion" does it say something about your team???
Agree with you completely

That is the stupidity of the vote. It, like polling for champions, is nothing more than a glamour contest. You could put up ridiculous numbers against good competition but if your team loses you are out of the race. Stoopsid.

Agreed. Gino Torreto, how does it feel to know that you are safeguarding and polishing Marshall Faulk's Heisman :)

Eric Crouch is doing the same for Sexy Rexy's trophy too.
