Senators pinning future on Swedish gems

08:23 AM ET 08.31 | Two years after being drafted by the Blues and a year after being traded to Ottawa, David Rundblad is becoming a bigger part of the Senators' rebuilding plan. Much like the Detroit Red Wings did a couple decades ago, the Senators are banking a large part of their rebirth on an ability to find gems in Sweden, with former scout Anders Forsberg making a big impression in that department during his two years with the team. In addition to vouching for Rundblad, Forsberg had a hand in drafting Erik Karlsson, Robin Lehner and Jakob Silfverberg, all of whom have outperformed their draft position in the years since and are high on playing in Ottawa given the presence of captain Daniel Alfredsson.

Karlsson and Lehner would be nice additions to any team. The Sens still have a long way to go.

They can hoard all the "Swedish Gems" they want but until they get rid of their Canadian millstone they ain't going anywhere.

That would be Bryan (get your raincoat) Murray...I don't know how many more years Melnyk is going to hang onto this guy. It's his poor decisions that have put the club in the position it's in.

As beautiful as they are in the Winter, Swedish Gems don't shine in the Spring.

I thought he was referring to Jason Spezza...However, every time Murray tries to bring his name up...he just can't seem to spit the name out. Isn't Melnyk selling the team still? I thought he was trying to dump it some time ago if memory serves...well it does and it doesn't serve, so anyone know what's up?

He was. But, I just took it and ran with it...LOL!!!

This is a quote from October of last season, so I don't know if anything's changed since then:

'There are certain owners, you can't come up with a figure that they would sell their team. It is just something that is not for sale ... ever,' said Melnyk.

Nope, you were correct the first time.

And as you're starting to think like me...be very afraid.

I'm just guessing...but it wouldn't surprise me that what their pinning on them now are donkey tails...

Has either Murray ever won? I know they placed, but never showed.

How did the Ford family hang on to Matt Millen? How long did the Flames hang on to Darryl Sutter? How long will the Islanders hang on to Garth Snow, the Rangers to Glen Sather, the Leafs to Brian Burke, the Blackhawks to Stan Bowman? Some owners deserve losing teams.

You got that right. Melnyk actually just re-signed Murray to another three-year contract.

Don wouldn't go out with just a plain ol' heart attack. Rather his head would literally explode into confetti and streamers. He's that much of a showman.
